Coroner James Lee told The Associated Press that Brown's wife found him near his computer about 2 a.m., and he was taken to a hospital but it's likely he had already been dead for several hours.

Chief Deputy Charlie Sims said Brown's wife found her husband after returning home from visiting another sick family member at Natchez Community Hospital.

Doctors believe Brown died instantly, said his brother-in-law Rick Freeman.

Brown had triple bypass surgery in 1996 and gallbladder surgery in 2008.

Sims said he and Brown attended court together Tuesday and the sheriff was in good spirits. "He seemed fine ... and didn't complain about anything," Sims said.

Brown took office in January 2004, after defeating incumbent Sheriff Tommy Ferrell. Brown won re-election in 2007.

Before seeking election as sheriff in 2003, Brown worked 20 years in the state Department of Corrections.

Lee said losing Brown is a blow to the community.

"He was a fantastic guy," Lee said. "His door was always open to anyone."

Brown had a degree in economics from the University of South Florida and further study in criminal justice from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Supervisor Darryl Grennell had worked alongside Brown for the last five years.

"He was just really a great sheriff," Grennell said. "He implemented a lot of programs in the county. And it didn't matter to him where the city limits were, he did anything for the entire community."

Grennell credited Brown with implementing a security system for the courthouse and other county buildings.

Circuit Judge Forrest "Al" Johnson said he has known Brown for 30 years and was still in shock about the news.

"I've lost a good friend. The thing that really has always struck me about him was how he handled people. He always treated everyone the same regardless of who they were," Johnson said.

Brown is survived by his wife, Angie; a son and a daughter. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
