Authorities: DNA links rapes to one suspect BY EARLESHA BUTLER • April 14, 2009 Post a CommentRecommend Print this page E-mail this article Share Del.icio.us Digg Newsvine Buzz up!Twitter LAUREL - The sexual assault of an Ovett woman in March has been linked by DNA evidence to a series of rapes in Jones County and an assault in Meridian, officials said Monday. Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge said evidence collected from the March 29 rape of a 58-year-old woman matches evidence in three other Jones County rapes from 2007 and a 2005 sexual assault in Meridian. "That was the first one in a sequence," Hodge said, adding that he had no information on the 2005 incident. The rapist is described as a Hispanic man in his mid 20s to early 30s, around 5 feet-7 inches tall. Hodge said the man also may be linked to a 2008 Forrest County attempted rape. Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee said there are similarities in the attempted rape and the Jones County incidents. "The victim is elderly and the suspect came in on the woman who was asleep," McGee added. "There's just some similarities that need to be looked at." Each of the Jones County incidents also involved older women, Hodge said. The Jones County attacks began in April 2007 when a woman was assaulted on Mississippi 184. A month later, another woman was attacked on Sharon Road. On Sept. 6, 2007, an 81-year-old Sandersville woman was attacked. Investigators said the man entered the woman's home through a carport window, raped her and fled with cash. Hodge said a 2005 rape in the Powers community of Jones County also may be linked to the same person. Hodge said he met with 12 to 15 different law enforcement agencies on Thursday to share information about the rape incidents. "It was a very informative, productive meeting," he said. "We were able to come together to share resources, ideas (and) come up with new information we might not have thought of. It's been very supportive." Hodge advised residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to their local law enforcement agencies. "Don't take any unnecessary chances," he said. http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/article...ONTPAGECAROUSEL |
