Mississippi man seeks owner of 59’ New Hanover High class ring By Nathan Evick StarNews Correspondent Published: Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 2:22 p.m. Last Modified: Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 2:22 p.m. A man who lives in Mississppi recently discovered a mysterious ring which unexpectedly tied him to Wilmington. Thomas Walker, 81, found a 1959 New Hanover High School class ring and is looking to reunite it with its owner in North Carolina. After his home on the bank of the Pearl River was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina, Walker began his life anew in the town of Picayune, Miss.. While there, he took to treasure hunting with a metal detector in some of the older areas of town. It was during one such trip to an abandoned lot, previously a church and later a funeral home, where he discovered some coins and other metallic artifacts of past Picayune residents, as well as the class ring. The ring has the initals “W.A.S” engraved on it along with the high school and the year. Judging by the date and size of the fit, it is most likely a man’s ring and the owner may today be between 60 and 70 years old. Upon discovery of the ring, Walker attempted to search for the owner by contacting New Hanover High School. He was able to find a person with matching initials from the time the ring would have been issued, but the former student had never reported the ring missing. Next, he contacted the StarNews, hoping to further expand his search. Investigative work is not a new challenge for Thomas Walker, however. For 35 years, Walker was a private detective in east central Mississippi, working on cases involving the search, rescue, and recovery of missing persons. He also scuba dived for local residents to recover lost items, as well as hunt for treasure and artifacts to add to his personal collection. Walker had already found several rings before this one, which he either gave to his wife or chose to wear personally. He disclosed no plans to sell the ring if he could not find the original owner, but he did remark that, “if I cannot find him, it’s a pretty ring, and it does fit, so I think I’ll just wear it myself.” If you have any information connected to this ring, e-mail New.Hanover@StarNewsOnline.com. http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/2009...High-class-ring |
