Edith Piaf was a French singer, who recorded many songs in the span of over 15 years. She had an amazing voice, but lived on the street until she was discovered. Eventually, she died when she was only 48 (I think thereabout), due to an addiction to morphine. She never wrote any of her own music, but had a powerful voice that could carry emotion, and is considered to be the most talented and well known artist to come out of Paris.
(There is a movie about her called La Vie En Rose starring Marion Cotillard, and it's great and I love it.)
Some popular songs from her include
Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (played in Inception)
La Vie En Rose (Covered by multiple artists, including Cyndi Lauper)
Padam Padam (Again, covered by many artists.)
and Hymne a l'amour.

(Some of my personal favorites are Autumn Leaves, Chanson Bleue, Sous le Ciel De Paris, and Sur Une Colline)
