Kusanagi Ito stepped into the darkened bedroom of her father's hotel room. Not wanting to leave the shadows she called home, her gaze lingered on the crib which housed her newborn baby brother. The thought was so surreal.

Beyond the door, she could hear her father talking in the adjourning living room, no idea his eldest lingered in his bedroom. That was alright though, she didn't want him knowing she was there. She'd had enough of her parents after just one conversation.

Just like everyone else, they blamed her for her ending up in the hospital. Blamed drugs. Fuck, why should she try to say sober if no one believed her anyway?

Pushing the thought aside, she eyed the crib again. Soon they'd all be hunting her for the coronation. Time was flitting by and yet here she was.

Life seemed so surreal now. She was the princess and future ruler of an entire planet, a planet that wasn't even her home. They expected her to swear fealty to a child princess whose life was far too perfect in her ivory tower to do anything more than judge Ito just like everybody else. Yet Ito was supposed to lay down her life for her. And somewhere along the way, Ito would misstep and destroy them all.

She'd always been described as a storm. When she entered a room, everyone knew. She held their attention like a tornado ripping through the land.

Except now.

Stepping forward, quiet as a gentle breeze, she crossed the room until she peered in at the sleeping baby. He was a little too red, reminding her of a squashed raisin. Soft down on his head was so light, it must have been blonde and she resisted the urge to touch it.

Storms were wild, out of control. Sometimes they were just a soft rain, a gentle kiss on a summer's night. Other times, they ripped through the land, upending everything in sight, destroying homes and lives in their wake without a care. They just kept moving until, exhausted, they disappeared.

"They get their second chances," she whispered to the sleeping babe. Her parents would get a chance to do things right.

Unable to resist, Ito reached down and gently brushed her fingertips along her brother's cheek and something in her broke. Her fingertips became her knuckles, just wanting to feel his soft skin on hers. So innocent.

Tears swimming in her eyes, she reached down and picked him up. The first baby she'd touched in hundreds of years. Since her own...

A soft sob escaped her lips as she cradled the infant to her. Looking down at his face, squashed raisin or not, he was perfect. Pure everywhere she was tarnished. How could she love something so much at just a glance?

"You remind me of another little prince I know," she told him softly, her voice thick and soft so as not to wake up the baby or alert her father to her presence. Holding him... would this have been what it would have been like to hold her own child? The thought shredded her heart. "You're going to hear a lot of bad things about me. Most of them are going to be true. You're probably going to grow to resent me, even hate me. But that's going to be alright. As long as I'm raising hell, they're not going to look at you. If they don't see you, they won't use you. You're going to stand a chance. I promise."

She wouldn't let her brother and soon-to-be-born sister be used as she'd been used. Ito could take the hatred. She could take the disdain, she was used to it. She'd take it all to keep him safe.

And suddenly she knew how to help Trea. He might hate her in the end, but that was okay. It would hurt but he couldn't fly in her storm. He'd only end up dashed against the rocks. But she could make sure the kingdom knew they feared the wrong royal.

No one could shine surrounded by her darkness but the nice thing about darkness is that it had people seeking the light. And she would make sure Trea shown like no other. He deserved that. He deserved a chance just like the little boy in her arms.

Feeling empty and cold and full and hot all at the same time, Ito cradled the baby to her and moved to the rocker, humming softly. It was ironic, in a way, but Ito softly began singing her favorite song from Sweeney Todd, finding the lyrics appropriate.

"Nothing's gonna harm you, not while I'm around
Nothing's gonna harm you, no sir, not while I'm around
Demons are prowling everywhere nowadays
I'll send them howling
I don't care, I got ways.

"No one's gonna hurt you
No one's gonna dare
Others can desert you
Not to worry, whistle I'll be there!

"Demons'll charm you with a smile, for a while,
But in time..."

Watching the light playing off the baby's face, Ito's gaze moved up to look out the window at the vast galaxy beyond. Off in the distance she could make up the faint star that was Earth and she knew the promise she made in the song wasn't just directed to the little prince in her arms but one thousands of miles away even as he rested on the ship. She would not let the world hate Trea for his birth any more. If the galaxy had to hate someone, she would be strong enough to take it.

"Nothing can harm you
Not while I'm around..."

Looking back down at her baby brother, her heart breaking at what the future held and yet knowing, just as when she was a little girl, she had little choice in the matter.

"Being close and being clever
Ain't like being true.
I don't need to,
I would never hide a thing from you,
Like some..."

The words made her wince. Liar, liar, raced through her head. Her voice wavered in the next verse and it was only through her many, many years of training that kept her from letting her tears break through completely.

"No one's gonna hurt you, no one's gonna dare.
Others can desert you,
Not worry, whistle, I'll be there!

"Demons'll charm you with a smile, for a while
But in time...
Nothing can harm you
Not while I'm around."

Bending forward, she kissed the little boy's forehead, her lips trembling. In this moment, she would be weak. She would fear tomorrow and all it would bring.

Rising, she set the baby back in his crib and backed away to the window. The room was undisturbed. They would never know she was there.

Opening the window, she stepped out on the ledge. It was time to be the unstoppable storm once more. Grabbing the balcony above her she lifted herself up and heaved herself up and over, not carrying that she was well over twenty stories in the air. If she fell, hey they'd sort of be like flying for a while. It was just when the ground broke her fall that it would suck.

Of course, she didn't fall, as she knew she wouldn't. Its why she rented the hotel rooms directly above her parents rooms. To come and go as she wished.

Looking out on the unsuspecting ship, she hardened her heart. By the time she was done, the world would be kissing Trea's feet and begging forgiveness. So what if she ended up condemned.
