A male Sloth-raptor in profile -Illustration by Saberrex Sloth-raptor Titanoraptor Meaning: Titan Thief Description: large crested plant eating theropod Species: T. asiaticus Family: Oviraptorosauria, Oviraptoridae Length: 28-32 feet Lifestyle: browser Range: Eurasia Distinguishing features: The largest and most placid of the oviraptors, this beautifully colored animal is colored with light gray skin, red-brown feathers covered in white stripes and has a yellow crest with a black band running along the crest’s top. It can be distinguished by these from the therizinosaurs that also share its habitat. They are similar to these animals in that they have four toes to support their weight as well as their browsing habits. Males are also smaller than females, but are brighter colored and are more territorial. Adult Sloth-raptors are solitary, with males and females coming together only to mate. The males then lead the females into a clearing and display to them, honking, roaring, and smashing small areas of vegetation to impress them. Once the pair has mated, the adults go their separate ways. The female will then find a secluded place to nest and then after three months’ gestation, lays a clutch of around thirty five eggs. The eggs hatch after a period of four months incubation, and are watched over by the mother, who does not leave the area. The babies are born blind and relatively undeveloped with the mother bringing food to them for six weeks until they can walk. The young stay with their mother until they are two years old and ten feet long. Adults live for thirty years. Habits and Habitat: Found in tropical areas where there is plenty of forest, Sloth-raptors are usually found in the company of other forest dwelling herbivores such as hadrosaurs and some ankylosaurs. They feed mainly on leaves and fruit but will also take eggs, small mammals and carrion. They love to gnaw on bones, which provide them with an excellent source of protein. This however puts them at risk from tyrannosaurs and the abelisaur known as the Bengal Naga. If threatened by either, they will mount a spirited defense, slashing at their enemy’s heads to keep them at bay. This usually is enough and if it isn not, the Sloth-raptor will give an ear splitting shriek to stun its attackers. They then flee while the attacker is disoriented and distracted. |
