Aucanychus in Profile -Illustration by Saberrex A true horror in the dark, the Aucanychus is a nocturnal giant predatory Alverezsaurid weighing up to 100 pounds and measuring up to 12 feet long. Native to the savannas of South America, this solitary stealth hunter waits until small mammals and dinosaurs wander close, after which it runs them down, bites into them and then lances its huge claws into the neck or belly of its victim. It makes strange wailing cries to maintain its territory and to panic prey into fleeing. During the breeding season, males raise the young after eggs are laid, leaving the female to hunt alone. The male raises the chicks until they are a year old, after which the young leave to hunt on their own. |
