Pole wakes from 19-year coma in democratic country Sat Jun 2, 10:50 AM ET WARSAW (Reuters) - A 65-year-old railwayman who fell into a coma following an accident in communist Poland regained consciousness 19 years later to find democracy and a market economy, Polish media reported on Saturday. Wheelchair-bound Jan Grzebski, whom doctors had given only two or three years to live following his 1988 accident, credited his caring wife Gertruda with his revival. "It was Gertruda that saved me, and I'll never forget it," Grzebski told news channel TVN24. "For 19 years Mrs Grzebska did the job of an experienced intensive care team, changing her comatose husband's position every hour to prevent bed-sore infections," Super Express reported Dr Boguslaw Poniatowski as saying. "When I went into a coma there was only tea and vinegar in the shops, meat was rationed and huge petrol queues were everywhere," Grzebski told TVN24, describing his recollections of the communist system's economic collapse. "Now I see people on the streets with cell phones and there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin." Grzebski awoke to find his four children had all married and produced 11 grandchildren during his years in hospital. He said he vaguely recalled the family gatherings he was taken to while in a coma and his wife and children trying to communicate with him. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Can you imagine waking after all that time has passed? I'd want to ask him all sorts of questions. |

"Would you like to talk about what's bothering you or would you like to break some more furniture?" "My car just hissed at me. There's steam coming out of the engine" "Was it the coffee? Are we gonna go too, just like the captain?" "I know what time it is, I don't need a bloomin' cukoo clock"

I read about this yesterday. He said when he went into his coma all you could buy at the stores was tea and vinegar. Now people have all sorts of stuff and they are stil complaining.

Can you imagine going into a 19-year coma and actually waking up from it? All of the catching up would take another 19 years.

i wouldnt know where to start if it took that long to come back to the world. it would be so strange! of course, if i had to choose coma of stasis i would choose stasis, that way i could be under for a while then wake up the same age physically and just get on with it. that would be cool... anyhow i think thats a funny point that guy made, about people still complaining even though its better... i guess though that will always be the case. |
