why did the doctor have to use any medical instruments at all? why didn't they just appear in his hand when he needed them?

perhaps a hologram isn't quite as tangable as the Doctor seemed, as in maybe a holo-whatever isn't actually as solid as the real object, and maybe not as exacting as the real tool

The doctor was a backup for the real thing , so all the tools of the trade were real because the real doctor would use then 99 % of the time .

Anyway , who said VOY had to make sense :p

still.. on the holodeck say if you eat something, or drink something, etc.. that's not Holofood or holo-placesettings, it's something that was replicated, because the holodeck uses a combination of replicated things and holoimagry to create a realistic environment, so by that definition any tools he'd need (atleast if this was a holodeck) would be replicated real tools, not a holographic representation

On a "real" Trek series they couldnt just replicate everything , or else it wouldnt take years to build a Starship , they would just replicate one :sarcastic:

Some things would have to be too difficult to just replicate ( what a holodeck does in conjuction with the transporter) .

They could build the part or instrument with parts made in the replicator , but the instument would most likely still have to be "real" to work properly

that's kind of what I was saying all along, that he can't just make a tool appear in his hand and have it be real, unless it was replicated and then beamed into this hand, which would kind of be overly complex and a waste of resources and power

I don't think that Kes could be anymore useless than she already was. :jack:
