My official review of St: Of Gods & Men There are many pros & cons about doing a film such as this & under these circumstances. Among the pros are having the opportunity to collect a large group of actors who are tied to the shows, because they have a love of it. There was no doubt in my mind that they were all there for the love of the thing & each other, & the fans, which is truly commendable, & undoubtedly appreciated The love is also transcended to the fans, for whom this project is almost solely made for. We love these actors & we love these shows, & therefore how could we not love them banding together to present us all this gift However, there are drawbacks to this production as well, the most significant of which is the inescapable lack of a budget. I'm pretty sure everyone, including the fans had long expected that lack of budget would mean a great deal of limits placed on this from the get go, & that would extend to effects, production, & even the script possibilities. Nevertheless, I think they combated this obstacle as well as could be expect, & in fact were quite creative & ingenious at piecing this patch meal work together with whatever means were at their disposal, such as old sets, old costumes, & charitable actors. Were there shortcomings? Sure, but since we expected them & they still trudged onward, & did a better job than one might expect, then it is able to be overlooked The acting did not displease me, in & of itself, especially seeing as there was a definite slant toward a more "over the top" TOS mirror universe style anyhow, with even the return of a few TOS guest characters. If there was any failing, it was in the dialog they were given to perform, which tended to be a bit hackneyed, but to the actors' credit they performed well enough to nullify that to a degree. I particularly thought that Tuvok, Uhura & Chekov managed to carry the project over well The story could have been better, but yet it was not altogether bad. It managed to provide the necessary components that are consistent with a two part tv series episode, & that's sort of how I view this whole endeavor, as a crossover tv series episode, & as that, it was alright. It's not as good as some Trek two part episodes, but better than some of them, which gives it merit, in my book All in all, If you are a Trek fan, then I honestly can't see how you wouldn't like it in some way, especially since it's not to be compared to a cinematic film, for which you'd plunk down 10 bucks or more. That's not what this was about. What it was about was all of us, the players & the watchers alike, loving Star Trek, & such being the case, & taking it at face value, for what it is, I'd call it a success, & worth a viewing by anyone who calls themselves a Trek fan |
