"Paramount Pictures is beaming up Simon Pegg to play Scotty in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek."

Pegg joins Eric Bana, Anton Yelchin, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Leonard Nimoy in the latest bigscreen incarnation of the classic TV series.

Penned by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the story chronicles the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members during their time at Starfleet Academy. Chris Pine has been offered the role of Kirk.

Paramount has set a November start date for the film, which will bow on Christmas Day 2008.

Abrams and Stratton Leopold are producing, while Kurtzman and Orci will exec produce alongside Bryan Burk and Damon Lindelof.

Pegg, whose recent credits include "Hot Fuzz," will star in the upcoming satire "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People."

-oh wow! i would never have guessed they would put Pegg into trek, if this article is true, i think thats amazing... i haven't really seen him in a serious role though and am worried i wouldn't be able to take him seriously, however i love the idea of it and i hope it works, if its true.

Panic, Chaos, Disorder....My work here is done.
Can't see it.

I wish they picked Paul McGillion ("Dr. Carson Beckett") of Stargate Atlantis.

Don't get me wrong I like Pegg. I just think McGillion would pull it off better, he even looks kinda like a young Scotty.

Jack Sparrow: "Did no one come to save me just because they missed me?"

Jack Sparrow: "Why should I sail with any of you? Four of you have tried to kill me in the past."
[looks at Elizabeth]
Jack Sparrow: "One of you succeeded."

This is where I first read the news. http://movies.msn.com/movies/hitlist/10-12-07_3?GT1=7701

Can anyone see the ironic typo in the third paragraph? Only an actual trekkie would probably catch it.

i saw it :p its quite subtle i guess.

still, im excited, more acting diversity between the roles might make sure that everyone in it is watchable and exciting.

I'm assuming he's really big in the UK??? If so, that will bring a nice big chunk of fandom with him.

yeah he is very famous over here, in some of our best films, and in some of the best TV we have as well. he is a fantastic writer and a very good actor too really. it will be nice to see him do something different like this (he is a bit of a geek so its probably fantastic for him)

but yes, a lot of the UK will like it... some of my friends i saw tonight, even the ones who really don't like star trek are prepared to see it if he ends up in it.
