Optical Audio Cable; PS2

I didn't know where else to put this so here goes..
I don't know what plug end is recommended for use in hooking up my PS2 (second generation silver) to my Panasonic home theater in a box.
I can get a cheaper cable from Panasonic but the plug ends are square. More expensive brands have rounded plug ends which, I am told, is a better conductor. I can get a cable from Sony for $70 or from Panasonic for $20. The shorter the better as everything is close together & I don't need to loop the cable many times & risk damage.
I need to order an HDMI cable from Pan anyway cause the cheap one I got from Wally World doesn't support Hdavi & I'm not gonna go altering pins when I can return it & get the compliant cable.
So I figured if a Pan optical audio cable wud work ok why not save the money?
Does anyone use an optical cable for PS2 to theater & what do you think I should buy??

Give that Roo a beer

I used to use it when i used the PS2 for my DVD player

Any old Optical cable from a quality seller will work just fine i think

If you can save 40 or $50 then go for it

Yeah, I could really use that extra money for something. Probably more video games. Then again a bottle of whiskey sounds nice.. :cheers1:

generally there's not alot of difference, in the case of optical there could be an argument made that there could be a difference from one cable to another, perhaps one's better shielded and of better quality so the optical data travels faster and more clearly to the other end, but generally unless you're an audiophile or something I doubt any of us would notice a difference, if you think the $20 cables of poor quality you can always return it, so if you can save money and probably have everything sound just fine anyway why not?
we want the old Kai! "bring sexy back, vote Classic Kai"

I don't consider myself much of an audiophile. Only to the extent of "it doesn't sound right" but usually remedy that with a treble or bass adjustment or other adjustments. If it's close enough, I can usually settle for it. I think I will settle for the cheaper cables. Thanks for the input. B)
And having change for whiskey sounds good to me. :martini:

Unless the game's audio was designed with discreet 5.1 audio channels, you really dont get the benefit of hooking it up to your HT receiver through the optical input.

It will still pipe sound through all the speakers, but it wont be true 5.1 unless the game is designed that way.

As for the round one that looks like your standard composite analog RCA connectors, thats the COAX type connection - Im not sure whether the PS2 has a COAX audio-OUT, but if it does, you need to make sure that your receiver has a COAX audio-IN in order to use it.

Drats!! I wish I saw this earlier because I could of given all the cords I had to my PS2. I'm pretty sure the cord you needed was among one of them. I sold this weekend at a yardsale. :(

Yeah only some of my games are 5.1. I namely want the better sound that is other than just from the tv's speakers & it would be nice to take advantage of the 5.1 at least some of the games have to offer. It does have standard rca cables. Be nice if it had hdmi but I'll have to save for a PS3 if I want that.
