Don't know if this has been brought up anywhere yet, as this is the only board I've visited in a long time. Anyways:

How exactly does the Enterprise get into space since it's being constructed on land? We already know that at least from the time of the the NX-01 all the way to the Enterprise-D and the Defiant time that ships are built in space docks. Starships don't even have the ability to enter and then leave a ship's atmosphere until Voyager.

Also..from Startrek.com libraray: "starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was built in the San Francisco Yards orbiting Earth."

This movie is going to be filled with SO many canon errors, it's going to make the haters like BX and Darren have flame fuel for many years to come. LOL

the original official explaination from the writers was "well you don't know it wasn't built on earth" then they retracted it to "well warp nacelles have to built in a gravity well to be balanced properly" then when the trailer came out it's obvious that the whole point is to make for that scene where Kirk drives up and looked on at the ship being constructed

so... you're right, the NX was built in space, the 1701 was at least built in San Francisco CA (they've moved that to Iowa now I Think), while the refit and every other ship is shown also being build or upgraded in space drydock, so why they'd suddenly go space, earth, space in their building practices seems odd, I've also seen someone point out that though the 1701 entered earth's upper atmosphere in that classic TOS Ep, everyone was flying around the bridge like ping pongs, indicating some kind of damage, so it would be kind of silly to build a new ship, then damage it on the way up

then we also know that gravity wells interfere with warp fields, and that warping in-system is a bad idea (or atleast warping right next to a planet) so the gravity well comment's also suspect

all this stuff (and even sillier stuff) is being debated everywhere, so it's certainly been picked up on

but again, I think to some extent they're favoring doing what they need for dramatic effect vs. being canon sticklers, so we'll just have to see how it pays off

the new corridors are kind of cool though

bring up some of those debates here Darren. I'd love to see discussions about this stuff going on here at Nexus. Create individual threads for each of them.

I agree it is really stupid to fuck up canon like this for no good reason. Doesn't really seem necessary to have yound Kirk drive up to the ship. Any number of similar scenes could have been constructed that could have the same dramatic effect rather than having him pull up on his little Kawasaki-1701A.

Where are you getting these "officail" statements from the writers?

the two statements came out back when that first teaser was released, you know the "under construction" with the welders?
back when it first was released and the st.com movie forum first started freaking out about it someone posted a trekmovie link with quotes from the writers, first being kind of vague when asked if the teaser meant the Enterprise is being constructed on earth, and then they confirmed it later and gave the gravity well excuse, almost all of it's probably somewhere in the trekmovie archives

all the official stuff they've said that I reference is either from old st.com archived articles or Trekmovie, or recent magazine interviews like the EW one

basically I think it's safe to say we all need to just go see the movie pretending it's a one off in it's own universe, because in that EW article that had the first images released of the movie a Paramount Exec talked about how they hired JJ for a reboot, then JJ praised the studio for allowing them to change canon on the fly if they needed

It looks basically like hollywood has thrown money at JJ and not told him what it was he was making... this is one of many problems i think we will encounter, however a re-boot doesn't have to be cannon and so doesn't have to be worried about.

All of the haters should band together and file an injunction with the Supreme Court to keep this movie from being released. :riot:

Obama, Pelosi, and Reid...there goes the country
So the other day here i wrote that i felt this was a remake, i just realised its not that simple. I totally forgot Nimoy was in this one playing his version of Spock...fuck Abrams has screwed my take on this movie.

Cannon violations, are you fucking kidding me...where do i begin

How bout age for starts. In TOS Kirk was at least a decade older than Chekov. Doesnt appear so in this take.

Then there is the Enterprise. It has been said that durring the first season of TOS the Enterprise was 20 years old. Gene Roddenberry wanted a ship with some history ive heard. Well its hard to exact its age. In TSFS the admiral said the ship was 20 years old, that would make its launch durring TOS's first season. But that cant be right, what about Pikes tenure as captain? Id say he was there at least 5 years. And then there is captain April, supposed first captain of this Enterprise. So given this i agree with the Enterprise being 20 years old durring TOS. So, the trailer shows Pine as Kirk watching the Enterprise being constructed, then Pine as Kirk is show on the Brigde of the ship. If you subtract 20 years from Shatners age from TOS you dont get Pine. Not to mention Chekov, who shouldnt be on its bridge but instead be a little kid.

 hold me Darren

:console: if the news gets any worse before the release we'll just show up at the Hollywood premiere and launch TOS DVDs at JJ to feel better

they wouldn't consider that assult would they? hmmm perhaps that's not a good plan after all :hedo:
