thanks to some scenes shown in London, along with an intel viral site touting existance of intel product placement, or atleast mention in the new movie we know that when ordering a drink in a bar Uhura will come across a Budwiser listing and certain aspects of the ship have a very Apple-y feel we know there's going to be ad blitzes and every movie has product placement these days but does it almost date a movie, or make a futuristic movie have a moment where you just laugh to your self and say "yeah right, in several hundred years they'll still be around?" when you consider intel somehow being a part of Trek computer systems, current Beer brands still existing, and 60s corvettes still existing as well I personally have always found parallels to today in Trek to be the cringe worthy moments, i.e. Tom's obsession with classic cars, or black and white movies, or late 20th century Earth culture or take the horrible manual flight yoke bit in Insurrection, where they simply stuck a 90s Logitech wingman joystick in there without even trying to alter it or the Delta Flyer's use of "tactile" controls thanks to Tom's love of cheesy black and white sci-fi and lets not even Talk about the Ep where VOY goes to 90s LA in short, I for one cringe when something current is put in a movie set in the far future because it's insanely unrealistic to think that people of the future would like and pine for the things we today enjoy that are 'retro', we certainly don't have mainstream fascinations about horse drawn buggies, and the way of life from several hundred years ago, in the same manner why would the people of the future? to them our 'retro' things we think are cool and classic would be the same as if we all secretly wished we lived in the Little House on the Prarie world and really if you gotta do product placement, must it be so obvious? (I can't wait to see if Motorola or Nokia have their branding on the communicators )

I think its inevitable that there is going to be some product placement or modelling in the film. Its one way of films pulling extra budget and it doesn't usually take anything away from plot quality or overall feel. Its a bit noticeable sometimes but i don't see much problem with it being in the new films. |

I agree they absolutely do not belong in trek. Especially brand names. And I especially hated the holograph tv shows. It was some of the worst in trek. I only tolerated the sherlock holmes in tng when they brought up the idea of them being sentient. In my opinion nothing in science fiction should connect back to this time unless it is a post armageddon type thing. |

No holodecks and very minimal holograms in ENT - mostly for mapping and tech specs |
