we all remember when STXI was first announced, JJ was so excited and talked about how he loved TOS and it's characters and how it was just a great era of Trek to base a movie in
then we find out via an EW article and few other interviews that JJ actually never really liked Trek that much, prefering Starwars, that he thinks that Galaxy Quest perfectly sums up Trek as a whole, and that Trek has been "uncool" so he wants to make it cool, he's also bashed the 60s TOS design and story many times, refering to the "silly stories" and "cardboard planets"
he's also mentioned how he never really cared much for Kirk or Spock, until after he saw the script, now he does
and besides, it's a movie for movie fans, not Trek fans, sillies :p

the Writer's also continually shot down the notion that it was a reboot, even straying away from the term reimagining (which is quite close to the same thing) and said that it would respect existing canon, even fit with-in existing canon, JJ also said the same things
Now we have people who worked on the movie saying that canonites mouths will hit the floor just with-in the first few minutes that they'll be crying "blasphemy!" but that it doesn't matter because the movie's so good
also in the EW piece we have a Paramount Exec talking about how they brought on JJ to do a reboot, JJ praises Paramount's support and the amount of freedom they gave him, even allowing him to rewrite canon on the fly if he needed to
the writers also have referenced Paramount's allowence of them being able to change canon as needed, and giving them an almost totally unspecified budget, simply "whatever they needed"

and there are many other such comments floating around

now on one hand this all could be a finely crafted PR campaign, first tell the fans whatever you need to tell them to hype THEM, then tell the mainstream public whatever you need to tell them to convince them it will be "cool" and certainly not like that silly cardboard filled blinky switch and knob filled 60s show
meanwhile mislead everyone and tell no one the truth

but then on the other it could be that the comments now are the truth, and the other stuff was just smoke and mirrors to keep the whole project totally under wraps and everyone happy until it was time to remove the veil

now reguardless of how you feel about "canon" or changes, or whatever, just on the basis of the changing sometimes contradicting statements, how do you feel about it? was it dishonest? do you think they were purposefully misleading people? was it right to possibly mislead people? etc..

or it's entirely possible that things are being taken out of context and being blown way out of proportion.

they don't even really contradict each other. He said he loved tos and the characters at the same time he was becoming involved in the project. He said he didn't really appreciate trek or the characters till he got involved. How are those contradictory?

frankly I think strict adherence to "canon" is impossible. It has become too involved and contradictory in the first place. That is why the novels are so much more alive then what has been produced lately. They don't have to tie themselves up in knots to work a plot around a billion little details that people who actually can write and produce a good movie don't have time to memorize. Ask yourself, would you rather have a movie that is totally designed around 40 years of details that were put together haphazardly in the first place? or would your rather have a really well written movie?

JJ's been saying lately he was never a Trek fan in interviews and in introducing the 4 scenes at secret previews

I honestly think it's probably someone's idea of a great buzz campaign, make it seems really unTrek since Trek is so unCool, then mainstream viewers will give it a chance or something :dunno:
