I keep seeing the smallest things being picked apart due to canon problems. Things like Kirk's ability to drive a stick shift. Is it reasonable to expect a writer to adhere to 40 years of minute detail when writing a script? What is the more vital issue, being a slave to the minutiae of trek or writing a good story that respects the broad outline of the trek universe? personally I see a couple problems outright with the hardcore canonite view 1) it contradicts itself all ready. Which version is supposed to be true 2) it was thrown together haphazardly at best in the first place Besides those issues, we need to look at writing quality. Do we want trek fan boy writers who know every minute detail? or do we want the best writers? Do we want the best stories? or do we want stories that fit in into 40 years of trivia? |

some things are minute...like the stick shift thing, or that the nacells are too fat. But other things are kind of a big deal. Like all of them already serving together, or starships being built on the planet instead of in spacedocks. Changes for the sake of the storyline are acceptable IMO. But changing something just so young Kirk has something to look at is unnecessary. They could have at least TRIED to give a damn about continuity. |

Both of the things you just mentioned are pretty trivial though Kai It would be a canon violation if the Enterprise looked like a Colonial Viper and Vulcans were pink with polka dots though |

actually, that would be a complete change, what Kai mentioned is what a canon violation is, basically when something happens that contradicts what's happened or been said before is exactly what a canon violation is ultimately what's done is done, but I would like to point out that the writers who wrote this movie are fanboys (atleast one of them definitely is) and have stated how great it is to be able to write a movie and do things they always wished had happened in Trek, so it's kind of an oxymoron to ask if Trek fanboys who know every detail should be allowed to write a film when that's exactly what happened to a good extent
