You cant expect 110% from others, when most times, they don't expect even 90% from themselves. -- Me.

Canada is bracing for a political battle royal as its three opposition parties jockey to wrest power from Prime Minister Stephen Harper less than two months after they lost ground in parliamentary elections.

Harper's Conservative Party, which has governed with a minority in the House of Commons since 2006, gained seats in Canada's October elections.

But the Tories fell short of a majority again, leaving an opening for a coalition of the country's opposition parties to take power in a dispute over how to address the slumping economy -- without new elections taking place.

The Liberal Party, which lost seats in the October vote, and the leftist New Democratic Party announced plans this week to form a governing coalition with the support of the Bloc Quebecois, which supports independence for French-speaking Quebec.

In a raucous session of parliament Tuesday, Harper accused coalition leaders of "betrayal" by relying on the support of the separatists and said new elections should be held if his government falls.

"You should have the confidence to take this to the people of Canada, who will reject it," he said, vowing Conservatives would fight "with every means that we have." iReport.com: Outrage brewing in Canada

But Liberal leader Stephane Dion, who would replace Harper under the planned coalition, said opposition parties hold 55 percent of the seats in parliament.

"Every person in this House has received a mandate from the Canadian people," Dion shot back. "The prime minister does not have the support of this House anymore."

Last month, Harper set a December 8 date for a vote of confidence in his government. But he could ask Canada's governor general, Michaelle Jean, to suspend parliament until January -- a move that would buy the Conservatives time to rally support for Harper.

In a television ad already posted on their Web site, the Tories accuse Dion of "trying to overturn the election he lost and take power through the back door."

"Shouldn't you get to decide?" the ad asks.

Jean has cut short a European trip "in light of the current political situation" and is expected to return Wednesday to Ottawa, her office announced.

Dion, New Democratic leader Jack Layton and Quebecois chief Gilles Duceppe requested Monday that Jean support a new government, arguing that Harper has mismanaged the economic downturn.

"Since the recent federal election, it has become clear that the government headed by Stephen Harper has no plan, no competence and no will to effectively address this crisis," they wrote.
