Recalls are a good thing , at least it prooves the maker is doing something about a problem before it happens Remember that the majority of recalls come from testing done by the manufacturer to find faults that most people wouldn't even see. They could try and sweep it under the carpet and fix it on the quiet with the next service , or recall. As far as what moonie was saying i 100% agree , but they also need to move quicker to respond to market trends. The autoworkers union seems to be the biggest hurdle for the big three fix that and everything else will fall into place |

We have three here Ford Holden (originally aussie , now part of GM) Toyota Ford and Holden both make unigue Australian vehicles Toyota makes the Camry and Avalon here but they are identical to those sold in other world markets. Holden exports the Aussie designed and built Commodore to the US as a Pontiac , the Middle east as a Chevy and a Vauxhall in the UK If GM goes beyy up then it would be difficult for Holden to go it alone , Ford would be screwed since they have virtually no export program and are bleeding red ink. Toyota would probably just pack up and leave and just import as it would be cheaper to build the Camry in Asia than build it in Aus. Nissan and Mitsubishi did the same over the last 20 years. People lose jobs and families end up in the street when factories close , it's very sad |

that's how the free market works though, I hate people losing their jobs as much as the next person, and yes it's horrible when they lose their jobs, but if the company is broken, they aren't making products people want enough to stay afloat, and if they're throwing their money in wrong places and funneling it to themselves and creating their own problem, they'll KEEP DOING IT, it's like throwing money at a black hole, it wont solve it, it will just delay the inevitable, at somepoint due to mis-managment, bad/unappealing products, or whatever reasons they're in trouble now, they will again be in a bankrupt, firing everyone situation again, just look at the banks that got bailed out, AIG got a ton of money and what did they do? they went on a spending spree retreat that blew a zillion dollars and then came back with their hand out again there's a reason these companies are going under, throwing them another life line isn't going to help them, banks aren't loaning right now, how do you expect people to buy their cars? people don't really like their cars for whatever reason, what makes you think they're going to change their mind due to a bail out? these companies have problems that require them to change or completely start over in some cases, and throwing these people money isn't going to fix it, they're going to keep being corrupt and make bad decisions that cause their companies to head to where they're laying people off again we need to stop putting bandaids on wounds that require stitches or amputations, all it does it keep things in their current state so it takes longer for them to get bad enough that they get better |

you're very right, those unions, while on one hand are meant to get workers a fair shake, on the other hand, they cost the auto makers so much that if they weren't around it wouldn't be such a huge problem |

one in 7 people in north america are employed by the auto industry in some fashion. That is a lot of people. I think what is to blame is a too powerful auto union that limits what kind of business decisions the company can make. |
