I don't know. Kai seems to think it can be done. And other people have definitly used animated gifs as backgrounds with no problme. |

Im sure they do, its just that each frame must render first before teh animation actually becomes smooth, so the more frames the animation has, the longer it will take for that initial hit to download - an image that size over multiple frames can easily weigh several megabytes. Not that I would intend to discourage, I'm just saying its not something I would ever do. |

dude, what are you on? Dial up? the majority of people on the internet have speeds of several Mbps, over 10 in most cases, if we can stream movies and tvshows in HD without a hickup a starfield's frames having to load for an animated gif should be nothing (especially if it's what I Think they're making, in which case there would also be very view images other things on it so as not to obscure the starfield) |

Its not just the connection, its also the video hardware. Even with broadband, it still takes a a few seconds for a large 1028x768 minimum single frame image to render on some lower end machines and hardware on shared memory and what not, not to mention anywhere from 8 to a dozen frames. And then there's folks (myself included) who set their browsers to dump cache on program close, meaning a having to pull it everytime they go there. rack of T'Pol's animated av, chunks me down for a few seconds everytime I come back after a close an visit a thread he's posted in, and thats just a small av, and I'm running decent enough hardware. Trust me, its not sweat of me, do what you guys wanna do, Im certainly not going to be a factor in whether you do it or not, and thats fine, its cool... I'm just saying. Me? Nah. |

your set up must be bad, because I dump my cache too and I never notice any problems what so ever here, or anywhere, sometimes it takes a few seconds for animated avatars to start cycling correctly, but it's slows nothing down and besides, it's only people stuck on dinosaur computers like mine that would have issues, all integrated graphics on new computers aren't that bad, and the new trend for major manufacturers for the last few years has been to install discrete graphics cards on practically the entire line, especially since the Intel 900 chipset snafu when Vista launched my computer's 5 years old, has a low-end graphics card for it's time (couldn't even play the top games at the time) and nothing you can throw at me has slowed me down (the 10mbps internet connection probably doesn't hurt though) |

I didnt mean that it continually slows anything down in the long run, just confirming exactly what you said.....a bit of a hangup on initial load |
