I dont know if anyone has this DVD and knows the difference between it and the original, but I was having a nostalgic moment and decided to toss the old Rankin-Bass original animated Hobbit movie into the player. I had taped this movie onto VHS when it aired on TV like 25 or so years ago, watching through and pausing out the commercials (yes I hated commercials even all teh way back then), and had continued to play it every so soften. I was joyfully captivated by it all these years, and enjoyed how it was produced using musical and poetic prose. I had watched it so many times I knew every nuance of it and all the sounds and songs, but as would be expected, after so much use, the tape got so worn that it eventually became virtually unwatchable. Then the advent of DVD came out and years later, this gem of a movie was eventually released. While still a fun watch, I was glad that nothing from it was cut from the original release, but there is such a travesty in the audio reproduction of it. Many of the auditory nuances of background audio were just either badly remastered and the audio track was so bad that it was just non existent and either had to he remixed or redone. Some things are out of synch, and there is quite a bit of it that just wrong and missing. Its amazing how little things like that that were probably just standard in production back then, that in this day and age of technology that they would just leave it done so poorly in the digital remastering. It truly is an atrocious remix.....That magical ringing sound when Bilbo wielded Sting against the spiders, the sounds of battle armor and weapons clanking, the awe of the Dragon Smaug roaring and destroying Laketown...all disasters in the DVD audio. Such a shame and disappointment. Anyone else with me on any of this? just curious. |

They also did one for Return of the King, but not for Fellowship or Two Towers - never really knew or inquired into why they skipped those. The ROTK remastering for DVD was much better done and just as I remembered it. Pretty much the whole thing is available on Youtube [utube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcGhoSYKyuc[/utube] I wonder if the Hobbit clips on Youtube are of the bad version....will have to check. |

I have that as well, I just didnt care for it at the time because I didnt like that they left it undone without the third book, and wished that R/B had done those two also. Also, with all the intermingled "animatized" live action that went into it, you have to wonder why they bother animating it at all, and is probably why they didnt go all the way, probably running out of money |
