Sony is about to release the newest version of the PSP; arguably the most successful handheld gaming system not made by Nintendo.

The new device is about half the size of the current PSP system and is said to weigh just under four ounces. As you can see, the screen slides up to reveal the control pad, a feature that is common in contemporary cell phones and Sony's Mylo device. The biggest change is the fact that there is no UMD drive on the PSP Go. The system uses 16GB of flash memory and you can use the Memory Stick Micro slot to expand this to 32GB. All games and video content must be downloaded to the device.

How much will it cost? While the PSP3000 currently has an MSRP of $169, the PSP Go will debut at a whopping $249. That's almost as much as a new PS3 Slim.

The PSP Go does have an integrated WiFi connection and can download games directly to its memory. The system also retains the ability for remote play with a PS3. Contrary to popular belief, the PSP Go does not utilize a touch screen nor does it have a secondary analog controller.

My thoughts:

I think that Sony is trying to kill two birds with one stone. I believe that they would like to eventually move away from the UMD format without pulling a "Sega" and alienating the current PSP owners. New games will be made available in both UMD and downloadable formats so you don't need to upgrade to a PSP Go right away. Having said that, there are a number of games that are only available from the download store. I'd also wager that Sony is attempting to thwart piracy by making the battery mostly irremovable by normal means and updating the firmware (as if that will work).

Is the PSP Go a good buy? If you don't already own a PSP and don't mind the hefty price, the PSP Go may be worth it. Current PSP owners will not be able to play their UMD games on the new system and will neither need to keep an older PSP around for those games or else buy them again in downloadable format. Similarly, if you already own a PS3 and are looking for a portable system to connect with it, either version of the PSP will work fine.

However, if you don't own a PS3 or a PSP and are looking to own both, here's what you are facing:

PS3 Slim - $299

PSP Go - $249

A couple of games for each - $80 to $200

That's a total of around $630 to $750. You can give yourself an $80 discount by going with the older PSP 3000 but you'll be facing the fact that the UMD games will eventually be phased out. The plus side is that used UMD games can be had relatively cheaply. The PSP Go's advantage is that you don't have to worry about scratching up your UMD discs but the risk is that anything that happens to that flash memory could possibly wipe out your entire library and all of your game saves as well.

I still have (and use) a PS1, which I got new along with a coupla memory chips, and I bought 8 games second-hand. It does for me.

Give it six months to a year, and the price of the PS3 Slim/PSP Go will come down by around half.

You cant expect 110% from others, when most times, they don't expect even 90% from themselves. -- Me.

saying that it's the most successful handheld not made by Nintendo is like saying Linux is the market leading OS... not made by Apple Corp or Microsoft

it should have a touchscreen, and it's overpriced, really though, it's purpose is to act as a PS3 extention by letting you transfer video content back and forth, promote their downloadable store a bit more, and appeal to people who already own a PS3 but possibly don't own a PSP, obviously it's the handheld with the most powerful graphics, but it's price is kind of stupid considering that you could get a console for that much pretty much

Fair enough, but when you consider the Game Gear (11 million units), Sega Nomad (1 million units), Atari Lynx (500,000 units), Turbo Express, Neo Geo Pocket/ Pocket Color (2 million units) and the WonderSwan, the PSP (51 million units) has been the most successful "other" handheld by far, especially in a market where the Gameboy/DS lines have been essentially licenses to print money for Nintendo.

I agree. You can get a Wii or a 60GB Xbox 360 for that much or a PS3 Slim or Xbox 360 Elite for a little more. The days of handhelds being the cheaper alternative may be waning.

Only if people continue to pay these ridiculous price for them. If people dont pay it, they'll have no choice to drop it

STILL couldnt believe people were willing to drop $600 for a next gen gaming console when it released. Outrageous.

$600? Pffft. People were spending $1,500 up on those systems in the early days when supplies were low.

True, it's the only one to make some kind of inroad at all, but I mean what are the DS numbers if you include the whole of the device? (DS, DSlite, now/soon DSi) then just look at the ludicrous numbers the GBA/GBA:SP/(not so much: GBAmicro) had, then the crazy numbers for the old Gameboy/pocket which amazingly killed higher tech, better graphic and fuller functionality hand helds which it's 8bit gaming prowess for a small eternity (the color didn't really last long enough to do much)
it really is kind of rediculous :ummm:
that's why I used the OS analogy, because in some ways alternate OS' like Linux are gaining market share somewhat, but then compared to the Microsoft dominance it's not much. So while successful for Sony, it's still a drop in the bucket compared to Nintendo's scary strangle hold :wtf:

It's funny too, in a box somewhere I have all the old Gameboys, the classic one, the 'color' one (when color simply meant now instead of coming in controller grey you could get the Gameboy with a colored casing) the Pocket, the GB Color, the Original Advanced, the SP, the first DS... and that's about where I burnt out, no Lite, no DSi, and no Micro

I think the DSi's going for like $170 or something too... so yeah, handheld being the cheap way to game is starting to become a misnomer
