I don't think it's due to the economy. Video games have done fairly well this year. The Wii is four year old technology and has been on the market for three years. Nintendo systems typically drop in price before this much time has gone by.

Most companies actually lose money on console sales and make it up through software and royalties. The Wii was an unusual system in that Nintendo was actually making about $20 profit on each Wii console so of course they were going to try and milk that for as long as possible. This price drop owes more to Sony and Microsoft lowering prices on their consoles.

reason being that now the Wii isn't the cheapest console anymore, so it loses that price point arugument that's helped it the last few years

Still, even at the $250 price, which is what I got it for over a year ago, it was still much lower than xbox 360 or PS3

The 60GB Xbox Pro is discontinued and sells at $249 until they are gone.

The 120GB Elite and the PS3 Slim sell for $299.

Well, they have confirmed it:

Give it some time and Dell will probably be selling them for around $175 to $185 and you'll be able to use Bing's cash back program to save a little more.

Amazon is offering the Wii console for $199 but they will give you a $25 gift card and ship it for free. Most of you wouldn't have to pay tax so that makes the net price of the system $175.
