L'Étoile du Nord

Okie dokie, here were go. First off, great show. I don't know anyone who has watched "Firefly" and "Serenity" and said "Meh, it was ok". People who have watched it for the most part loved it. FOX, as we all know, is run by morons and cancelled "Firefly" way before its time. Fortunately, we were given "Serenity" and several comic books after its demise. It's not the same, but the show will live on in fanfic and hopefully some more comics in the near future.

Key factors in what makes "Firefly" so great:

The Cast Joss Whedon couldn't have cast the show better. From badass Jayne to crazyass River, everyone was perfect in their role, to the point where for years after I'd see Nathan Fillion or Jewel Staite on another show and get a little confused because their roles on "Firefly" seemed so real.

The Writing, use of technology, and costumes Beautiful. The slightly evolved language really gives it a futuristic feel- the slang words and the addition of certain Chinese words and phrases give the impression of a more united humanity where conflicts are ideologically based instead of culturally and ethnically.

Now don't get me wrong, I love Star Trek, but the one thing that "Firefly" has over Star Trek is the technology factor. The technology here is obviously futuristic, but not so advanced to the extent that one has to seriously suspend their disbelief (i.e. warp drive and transporters). Guns here still have bullets, it takes days/weeks to get to a nearby planet, there aren't aliens (only cannibal humans). They still have diabetics and respiratory infections, there's still ministers and prostitutes, and they have to cook their own food (it doesn't come out of no gorram machine!). Also, let us celebrate the glory that is silence in space!

I love the costuming on "Firefly". Close to what we wear now, but different enough that it gives the illusion of a different time. The browncoats give a westernish feel, and Inara contributes an Asian influence. the rest of the characters seemed to give some personal flair to their basic outfits- like Wash's Hawaiian shirts and the teddybear on Kaylees coveralls.

Serenity Decent start for a series, although the pilots are frequently weaker than subsequent episodes. The major fault with "Serenity" is that it has a "roll call" feel to it. "Here's Malcolm Reynolds and his faithful buddy Zoe, uh oh, they lost. Did I mention they're thieves now? Sweet! Oh, there's this crazy pilot named Wash, he and Zoe are married, just in case you didn't catch it, we'll mention it a few more times and throw in some kissing. Oh, hey, there's a chick mechanic and she's always happy, and there's a dude who's crabby and likes guns! Guess what else? There's a whore on board! Woah! But true to the old cliche, she does have a heart of gold!. Just to add some conflict, here's a precher, a crazy chick and her rich doctor brother! Watch next week as hilarity ensues!". The only thing that would have made it more obvious would be "Hello, I'm_____" nametags.

I loved the opening battle sequence- the visual effects were well done and have stood up well over the years. One thing I didn't notice the first several viewings is the quick shot of Malcolm kissing the cross around his neck- very interesting when one later looks at his views on faith and God. You can see in his eyes the exact moment he loses his faith, when he realizes there are no reinforcements and he must admit defeat. Very depressing moment.

The rest of the episode was hit-or-miss for me, while necessary, some of the scenes I could have done without and still enjoyed the show.

Best of all? Showing the toilets! Star Trek was always so mum about the facilities, and here on "Firefly", they show the captain finishing up in the very first episode. Poor handwashing technique though.

Everything happens for a reason, but sometimes the reason is that you're stupid and make bad decisions.
