From Superman #419, the first appearance of "The Human Target," inked by Dick Giordano

Comics legend Dick Giordano, creator, editor, artist and teacher, passed away at age 77 on Saturday March 27 at his home in Florida.

His career started in 1951, and covered several companies, most notably Charlton and of course DC.

He was a good guy, a great artist, and it was my honor to have been one of his students years back.

He was a mentor to many artists, including Frank McLaughlin, Terry Austin, the late Gene Day, and Klaus Janson.

McLaughlin, who was Giordano's assistant and close friend for many years, inked Justice League for a couple years under Giordano's name before finally being given his own billing.

I've met many of my comics idols over time, such as Jim Aparo, Steve Ditko, Len Starr, Tom Orzechowski, and the departed Curt Swan, Dave Cockrum and the great Jack Kirby, but being part of Dick Giordano and Frank McLaughlin's Comics Art Workshop is something I will never forget.

And it was amusing to discover two of my favorite artists lived within a mile of my house...
