Nintendo unveiled the successor to their DS platform (arguably set to become the best selling game system in history). The new system is called the 3 DS and as you can probably guess, features 3-D graphics without the use of special glasses.

It looks very similar to earlier incarnations of the DS. That round nub in the upper left lets you adjust the 3-D graphics. It looks like the top screen is in a widescreen format. can also see that the power button has been moved to the inside of the case. There are three additional buttons below the bottom screen which are labeled Home, Select and Start. (Note that I am only familiar with the DS and DS Lite and I'm not sure how many of these changes are new to the 3 DS and how many might have made it to the DSi.

This system has 3 cameras. Two are on the back for taking 3-D photos and one faces the user for head tracking.

One of the launch titles will be an update to Kid Icarus.

The bottom screen is still a touch screen though there is no word if the 3 DS offers multitouch capabilities. I've heard that there are accelerometers inside the 3 DS that offer tilt control like the iPhone or iPod Touch but the 3 DS is reportedly more advanced in this regard.

Games will come on a unique card format that initially cap at 2GB but Nintendo will probably expand that limit. The system can also play DS games but I doubt that there will be any GBA support. There is also a slot for SD memory cards. Since DS games save to their respective cards, I assume the SD cards will be used for downloaded games and other media such as photos. Rumor has it that the 3 DS will be more internet friendly than its predecessors.

On the Wii front, Nintendo seems to be sticking to tried and true money makers. Expect new Mario Sports titles, Donkey Kong, Metroid: Other M, Goldeneye, Just Dance 2, a party game and a brand new Legend of Zelda game with a new art style improved controls thanks to the Wii Motion Plus accessory.

Nintendo better market something that is new, but it still works and isnt too cheesy. Today's market cannot handle another Power Glove.

Or a Virtual Boy.

To be fair, Nintendo rarely puts out a game system that fails. The N64 was actually successful, it was just limited by the cartridge format and the designers didn't give the console enough memory. Even the Gamecube for all of its blah-ness did manage to streamline that monstrous analog controller and the console did have some great games.

Currently the Wii has sold more units than the legendary NES and the DS is poised to sell more systems than even the PS2. I'd guess that Nintendo has put a lot of care into the 3 DS. They simply don't want to lose their momentum.

I liked the N64 cartridges you could do anything to them. These disks are way too fragile.

Cartridges are great except for when it comes to raw capabilities. Believe me, if they could keep upgrading the software with cartridges they would. And to Dark founder, a lot of people still use Game Cubes.
