We need to have a new rule: All trek references need to be limited to Voyager, TOS or TNG, until I can catch up with DS9 and Enterprise!

Remember how people stood in line to see The Blair Witch Project and assured each other that they were about to see "real" footage despite the fact that the actors were giving interviews? Remember John Titor? Remember Y2K? People worry me sometimes. For the record, this is what a hearing aid looked like at the time... http://hearing.siemens.com/sg/10-about-us/01-our-history/milestones.jsp?year=1924 |

Yeah but.... I want to believe its a time traveller - I want time travel to be possible, I want to jump 100-150 years in the future because things are bullshit they way they are now all stagnant and no progression except for new and improved ways for people to electronically make fools of themselves. I want to get to clean energy times, with air cars, and free energy and no money and all that stuff that makes life good to live again. Things suck today. |

Ok, the science bit. This is probably gonna be a bit long-winded, so if you wanna just slide on past, then be my guest. ![]() Fact: the idea of a person travelling through time, exists only in the realms of science fiction. Where our hero projects to a future or past time, kicks butt, and returns to their own time, may be good for Hollywood putting butts on seats in movie theatres, but can and will never happen in reality. Why ?? Einsteins's Theory of Relativity for one thing. Only light can travel AT the speed of light, and matter CAN NEVER travel faster. And since, according to the theory, at the speed of light all time slows to a virtual standstill, to travel backwards in time you would have to be going faster than light speed, where time will move in reverse. And since the future hasn't actually happened yet, not even a DeLorean can go there !! However, there is an alternative. Electricity is not matter, it's energy. Yes, I know, it's composed of electrons etc which ARE matter. But since they are so small, accelerating them to light speed is far easier than trying to accelerate a human - either with or without a DeLorean !! And, since people cannot go that fast, we have to look for something that can. So tell me, when was the last time you sent or received an email ?? That's right, the moment you press 'send', your email is already travelling AT light speed, and this is how we can travel into the past. Now, normally, events follow in a very linear pattern; cause, then effect. Except, by sending ourselves (for eg) a message into the past, warning of future events (from our perspective) then effect can preceed cause, and by changing the events the message warns of, alters time and sends it on a different time-line. And by sending a message, does away with the annoying fact that trying to get back to a future that no longer exists would cause. We could simply throw the message away, and not worry about it. Whereas, in the movies, our hero has to make it back to his own time ok. Let me give you an example. Suppose we sent an email back warning of the 9/11 attacks before they occurred. Chance are, they never would occur, if the right people got the message and acted upon it. However, warning General Eisenhower of the Pearl Harbor attacks in WW2 is a non-starter; no computers, and so no email. But, since 9/11 changed the world, such an email would be devastating to the attackers, and our world now would be so different to how it actually is. And since we are fortunate to be so far ahead in time, any further attacks could easily be averted also. Yes, I know, I've not addressed the idea of paradox. And am not gonna, since it's about this time when the headaches start, simply trying to comprehend the enormity of the problem. But certainly, for time travel, think message rather than people. And as for going to the future. Write your message down, put it somewhere safe, then sit down and wait until that moment arrives, THEN change the past. Edited by spocklet, Oct 30 2010, 03:33 PM.

I just saw an interesting peice where a couple of scientists were discussing this theory If there was a time machine that allowed you to travel to the past the thing is that only those that live in the future could travel to when this time machine was built So to say that if you built a time machine today then those from 5 - 10 or 20 years from now could travel back to today So having said that the only way that the woman in this video could be a time traveler from today is that someone built a time machine in the 20's Interesting to think about But the woman is most likely just using a hearing aid from the 20's |
