Over the last few months I've been playing the Beta for OnLive's wired and WiFi service. I'm posting about OnLive now because the site is starting to become a decent value for all of you. This post is for those of you who might be unfamiliar with the service. What is OnLive? OnLive is a way to play PC video games without investing in a pricey gaming rig and having to upgrade every six months or so. The service uses a concept called cloud-based gaming. Put simply, the games are processed by OnLive's system and streamed to you over a broadband internet connection. What can you do with OnLive? You can buy or rent video games and play them instantly (think Netflix for games). Many games have demo versions you can try for free. You can create a friends list, email your friends and watch them play games. Did you make an awesome play? You can create "brag clips" of your gameplay and save them to your profile where others can view and rate them. There is also a very cool feature called the Arena where you can watch other users play games from their perspective. You'll see exactly what is on their screens and can cheer or jeer their plays. Are there any minimum computer requirements? These are the minimum system requirements for OnLive: MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: 1. Internet Connection: 3 Mbps wired or Wi-Fi connection 2. Operating System: Windows 7 or Vista (32 or 64-bit) or XP SP3 (32-bit), Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later 3. Computer: Most PCs and netbooks, all Intel-based Macs 4. Screen Resolution: 1024x576 RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 1. Internet Connection: 5 Mbps, wired connection 2. Operating System: Windows® 7 or Vista (32 or 64-bit) or XP SP3 (32-bit) 3. Mac® OS X 10.6 or later 4. Computer: Dual-core PCs, all Intel-based Macs 5. Screen Resolution: 1280x720 As you can see, even a netbook with a 1.6Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM can play OnLive. How much does it cost? As of now OnLive membership is free but you do have to buy or rent games. It is free to sign up as a trial member and you do not even have to enter any credit card information. If you do enter your credit card information you will be upgraded to a Founding Member but that is free too. It used to be that a Founding Member received one year of membership for free than a charge of $5 a month. That is no longer the case. it is possible that OnLive may charge a monthly fee in the future but there are currently no plans to do so. I suggest becoming a Founding Member now for the possibility of being "grandfathered" in at no cost should OnLive start charging. Games vary in cost but as an example, you can buy Borderlands and play all you want for $19.99. A 3 day rental costs $6 and a 5 day rental costs $9. Does it work? Actually, yes. A wired internet connection works best. OnLive does work for WiFi. I've been trying out the Beta version of WiFi and while I think they have made a great achievement in that area, there is just a little bit of lag that could be a problem for FPS games where twitch reflexes are required. Any downsides? At this time my only concern with OnLive is that it consumes a lot of bandwidth. If you have a plan with limited bandwidth or if your ISP throttles customers who download too much data, this may not be the best service for you. Those people on unlimited data plans should be good to go. How do I get started? www.onlive.com Edited by Dark Founder, Nov 12 2010, 04:57 AM.
