An unassisted Triple play, is when bases are loaded, and the batter hits a line drive to the second baseman or shortstop, who catches it... 1 Out. That defensive player then steps on second base to nab the runner that didnt tag up. 2 Outs. The player then tags the runner that was advancing to that base. 3 Outs. All made by one player. This play typically gets executed far too fast for anyone to react, and happens in the span of just a few seconds. There have only been 18 unassisted Triple plays executed in the history of professional baseball....and last night at our softball awards dinner, we awarded a plaque to a young girl who performed the only one ever made in the history of our softball league. She is 9 years old.

Not knocking the performance of this girl, that really is a great accomplishment. But how stupid is the player who's running from first base to 2nd base? She should have had plenty of time to get back to first. |

Kai is too logical ![]() I think the most common would be Catch the ball Tag the runner and then tag the base.... Because of the the runner leading off they may be almost at the base when the ball is caught or right in front of the person catching the ball... The entire action probably happens in about 2 seconds... unless you have chase down the runner... or run to tag the base before the runner tags up. |

Eh, it happens. This age group is only 2nd through 4th grade, and a fair amount of them playing organized softball for the very first time - they see a line drive go, and figure that its NOT going to get plucked out of the air, like it did in this case, and dont realize right away that they have to go back. The field is short too for Girls softball - only 60ft bases |

it was also quick thinking. you tend to see a lot of kids freeze up when they catch a fast flyball like that. |

This was her third season playing for us, so she has some skill, but yeah, she was pretty dazed that she caught it, but knew what she had to do once she realized it. But those kind of shots do freak some of them out - one girl a couple of seasons ago, had one driven right at her - not the greatest player you ever saw, so she freaked, yelled out, put her glove up in front of her face just out of instinct to protect herself.....and caught it |
