Residents claim Penrose pot facilities using too much water

The new hot spot for cultivating marijuana- a small southern Colorado town. Some who live in Penrose say the water being used to grow the business is drying up the town.

The group Penrose Concerned Citizens made these flyers. On it, there are claims that medical marijuana grow houses could be using up to 100,000 gallons of water a day.

"I would hate to have a situation where one day we turn on the water tap and there's no water," said Richard Hildebrand, resident.

He thinks if the buds keep blooming, that situation is likely to happen.

"I would say in the last four months we've had the operations that are growing marijuana moving in," said Hildebrand.

He says more are coming in-- taking over the towns water supply.

"I think it's going to influence the quality of life a great deal here," he said, "but not it a positive way."

Hildebrand claims every acre of marijuana cultivation may take 20,000 gallons of water per day. News 5 spoke to a grower- who does not want to be identified. He says that's not true.

"I thought it was a little funny because there's no way we're ever going to use that much water."

He says the company's water bill consistently sits around $100 a month. His is a small grow operation, so we also stopped by one of the largest grow facilities in Penrose, popularly known as Apple Valley Greenhouses.

No one answered the door or the phone.

As for Hildebrand, his goal is to stop recreational marijuana facilities from coming to Penrose.

"You can't move in to an area where there's not sufficient water for the residents," said Hildebrand.

The Fremont County Commission banned the sales of recreational pot, but said they might revisit the issue if the state tax passed- which it did.

Penrose Concerned Citizens say they got their numbers from researching grow houses across the country. We contacted the Penrose water district today to see if they have numbers of their own. They have not answered our request as of yet.

I swear, these people will try anything to get what they don't approve of out of their general area. I say their Navigators and Escalades use up too much water to wash them. Or how about their kentucky blue grass lawns and koi ponds eating up too much water. For Pete's sake.
"Would you like to talk about what's bothering you or would you like to break some more furniture?"

"My car just hissed at me. There's steam coming out of the engine"

"Was it the coffee? Are we gonna go too, just like the captain?" "I know what time it is, I don't need a bloomin' cukoo clock"

This actually typical in neighborhoods. Ask your local cop, maintenance, firefighter, etc. about the crap they have to put up about people bitching about stuff all the time.

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me. Just recently down south, one solitary neighbor tried to get their neighbor's code-approved wheelchair ramp (for their teen-aged cerebral-palsy daughter) removed because it decreased property values.

An old neighborhood I lived in for 17 years had a guy move in complaining about how everyone else's car/shed/fence/bee hives/etc. decreased his property value.

It's just so silly and unfortunate people can be so intolerant that they'd make the news.

I agree. This seems like a lame excuse to try to halt the growth of medical marijuana.

I'll think I might move to where you're at. :allteeth:
"Hey dad, I just remembered something from when I was a baby." "Really son? What was it?" "I just remembered I wanted to punch you in the face."

"He was a thief, and a terrorist."On the other hand he had a tremendous singing voice."
"Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades."
"Mom's just worried they're gonna rip my heart out."

The weather/climate here is an issue for outdoor growers. Not to mentions all the hikers, hunters and wildlife running about. Technically, out-in-the-open grows are not legal here at the moment. Not that that stops anyone.
