My latest Wissa post has inspired me to do a general thread about differences of speech in the English language since I seem to be so fascinated with it. So the first thing I would like to bring up if preferred. Do you harshly stress the last syllable? (pre-fer-ed) or do you not? (pre-furred) Or, better yet, do you change it according to mood or subject? |

Now you got me sitting here saying "preferred" over and over again. I think I say it pur-fur. Does that sound like how a New Yorker would say it? I've been told I have a New York accent, but I really don't believe that.

I wish they had that accent survey that narrowed yours "down to the town". I haven't really talked to anyone on the phone here besides Vil so another's perception of one's accent is always an interesting perspective. I've been told I'm a mix and sometimes I hear it or correct it as I don't like being singled out. It's interesting how it's media exposure as much as it's parents, children you were around growing up and location. Like how we say "data" is going to be how the show pronounces it. "One is my name, the other is not." ![]() It does indeed change depending on mood or context, ie: for route I tend to say "root" if it's mail related but "rowt" when it's bus related. |

"Would you like to talk about what's bothering you or would you like to break some more furniture?" "My car just hissed at me. There's steam coming out of the engine" "Was it the coffee? Are we gonna go too, just like the captain?" "I know what time it is, I don't need a bloomin' cukoo clock"

This is honestly the first time I have ever realized that route "root" and route "rowt" are actually the same word. I also pronounce it differently in context.

An accent is when a person of a different language speaks a different language A dialect is when native speakers pronounce words differently My dialect coach beat this into our heads
