Here are some basic cat behaviors. I can go into more detail, but I'd rather keep things simple and basic here. If you have further questions, feel free to drop me a PM or email.

Aloof. Most cats are aloof and independent creatures, they prefer to be by themselves or with others that they trust. At first cats are cold to new cats, but once they know you do not mean them harm they will SLOWLY warm up to the other cat(s). Do not mistake this for cats not being social creatures, they are. They just prefer to do their own thing most of the time, they can work in groups and often do.
Note: When you raise a kitten with other cats or animals, they form an instant bond and will bypass the cold and aloof stage only during kittenhood.

When Feeling Fear. When cats shows fear, it's showing that it feels threatened, often times they will strike out or run away when feeling fear. The classic signs of fear in a cat is a back that arches outwards, fur that stands up on their back and tail, lowering their body close to the floor, hissing, and striking. When running away, the object is to appear small in order to quietly slip away unnoticed. When fighting the object is to make themselves look bigger than whatever is threatening them, they also will try to confuse the enemy by making weird movements and taking odd body positions. Cats have often times scarred off alligators and bears.

When Feeling Agitated. When feeling agitated or annoyed cats wag their tail -- if you see a cat wag or twitch their tail repeatedly BACK OFF or the cat will go into fear mode. You might also hear quick, high-pitched meows or deep drawn out meows.

When Feeling Content. Cats will often just take a nap, begin grooming themselves, or rub up against someone they trust.

Motion Sensitive. Cats hunt what moves, they are alerted to movement rather than sight. I once held my cat to a window to see a deer in our back yard that was RIGHT in front of our window, and she did not see it until is moved. If something moves fast, cats become excited and will begin a chase. They often times like to "play with their" food for half-an-hour to an hour before allowing it to die.

Purring. In general there are 3 reasons why a cat will purr, this goes as following.

1. The most common function of purring is so a kitten can tell his mother that "all is well." This often occurs during nursing. A kitten can't meow and nurse at the same time, but can purr and nurse without any problem. The mother often purrs back, reassuring the kitten using this tactile, resonant communication.

This is why your cat purrs when petted, instinctively giving the signal "all is well," a message you can both feel and hear.

2. Older cats purr when they play or approach other cats, signaling they are friendly and want to come closer.

3. Cats also purr when they are distressed or afraid. Sick and injured cats, and those in veterinary offices often purr. It is thought that this is the cat's way of reassuring and calming herself.

Territorial. Cats are VERY territorial, if you ever have a cat you may see the cat rub their face against something or claw an area of the house.. this is them being territorial. When they rub their face against something, that is them rubbing their scent on it and is marking it to keep other cats away. Same goes for scratching (which is why you should always have scratching posts in your house) - side note, cats must remove old talon sheaths from their nails regularly, which is another reason to keep scratching posts around. Even if there is no cat around to threaten them, cats will continue this behavior regularly.

If a cat actively feels that their space is being threatened they will begin spraying the area with urine just like dogs do. However, unlike dogs they do not raise their leg. When cats spray urine they arch their back slightly outwards, sticking their tail straight up in the air and vibrate it quickly while releasing the urine. Often times with humans owning cats, to fix this they either get the cat spaded or neutered .. or find and remove whatever is threatening the cat.

Showing Trust and Affection. Often times if a cat trusts another cat they will sometimes groom the other cat by licking their head and by playing with them, this is also how they show affection. The ultimate form of showing trust from a cat is when it lays on it's back, this exposes all the tender places that would be easy for you to attack their vital organs. If a cat lays on it's back this shows that this cat trusts that you will not harm him or her.

Another form of affection is when a cat "massages" you. I believe all cat owners and anyone who has been on youtube has seen this, this is the rhythmic up and down massage that cats do. What this is is left over kitten behavior that kittens do to their mother in order to get milk. This is done when a cat feels contentment and is around someone (or somecat ;) ) that they trust.
