The salted air filled her lungs as she took in a sharp breath -- the calm water rippled with the stirring of life. Fish. Adrenaline shoot through her like a lighting bolt as her paw shot into the water with talons digging into the slippy scaly flesh of her prey. Her slender, shadowed colored paw rose the medium size anchovy out of the watery refuge that the fish called home, and plopped it's gasping and writhing body onto the wooden planks of the pier. One paw quickly holding the tail of it's body down as her teeth made quick work of tearing the flesh from still living bones. The taste of blood and meat rolled over her tongue, as bite after bite she devoured this small and helpless creature as it finally stilled it's struggle against her paw. Her empty belling filling slightly with the tiny meal that it had offered her... she would need to catch a few more. With just small scraps of flesh left on the toothpick sized bones, Marlo turned her attention away from the thoroughly eaten creature and back onto the sea. The day was young and she would need to fuel her body for a full days hunt -- her pride relied on her after all for the food that they so desperately need. She lowered herself as low as she could on the pier, with ears pointed forward and eyes watching intently as the dark abyss of the sea swirling before her -- cloaking the secret bodies that hid amongst it's shadows. She knew the tricks of shadows well, fore she lived in them and carried it with her deep murky brown coat -- and soon her eyes began to follow the subtle movements of the water for signs of prey... The morning sand was cold on Bard's paws and clung to his brown fur. Across the waves through the hazy clouds, the sun was sluggishly rising, casting watery sunlight. The seagulls over head cried out and watched the thick tom wearily from the safety of the sky. A few downy feathers fluttered by Bard in a breezy sea scented wind. The day was looking to be a good one. Bard smiled and continues his path down the sandy coast, not minding the rush of the tide that swept around his feet. The water actually felt nice. Golden eyes followed the line of the horizon until his gaze fell on a crouched brown form on a long, wooden pier. He breathed in deeply and caught the scent of a queen. Ears perking forward, he lowered his head and silently approached. Her primary interest seemed to be on the water below, dark and murky. He didn't want to scare away her prey but scaring her wouldn't earn him brownie points either. Instead he allowed himself the luxury of quiet subtle noises; the scraping drag of his paws on the sand and rocks for example. Carefully, he moved up coast to climb onto human concrete. Then he moved onto the pier, the creaking of the wood causing another alert. He came to stand half down the pier, nose twitching. The smell of fish was strong and he could see the carcass of a devoured sardine. There was a seagull who also seemed quite interested in it too. It had landed half way between Bard and the queen and, while he kept a weary eye on both cats, he seemed more interested in the carcass. Bard remained perfectly still, unwilling to scare off such a large, potential meal. Perhaps he could even split it with the queen. The white bird stretched its wings and moved in a halting, jerking walk, going left then right as it curiously examined the two cats then the fish. The tom looked away from it and turned to look back at the rising sun. The grey clouds were trying to part and the sunlight was getting stronger and warmer, casting soft honey golds and oranges amid the blues and greys. Hopefully the clouds were just passing and it didn't mean rain in the future. ((Word: 380 sorry for typos. I'm on my phone so it's hard to catch them all. Hope you don't mind me jumping in though. EDIT: Sorry for not reading the board description as well. OTL I have dumb moments like that.)) |

With ears rotating to better hear the disturbance. She turned her dark coffee body to the direction of the noise, she slinked into a defensive position as her startled gaze locked onto a strange tom that stood before while eying a bird that stood stooped on the pier. The tom that joined her on the pier did not have the smell of either pride on him, and un-top of that he looked quite relaxed with the sun shining in his eyes -- hardly the stance of a cat that's about to attack. While she looked on at the new tom, and while the tom basked in the sun -- the bird that eyed the fishy carcass finely swooped down and snatched the tiny bones and carried it off to the far end of the pier away from the cats -- now truly the two were left alone. Still suspicious, Marlo's ears laid flat along her skull while her hair made a tall ridge on her back. "Who are you?" she growled in a bitter howl that hissed with strong warning. She wanted it to be painfully obvious that she was not to be trifled with, this warning has become an all too familiar call for Marlo in this new world without their old masters. It was just another reminder of the life she has lost, and the new life she must live. Though she felt odd being so tense while the other cat sat peacefully, she knew that she could not let her guard down around others that she did not know. Marlo knew too much of the evil that lurked behind sweet faces to trust openly anymore. Talons dug into the old wooden boards, and her eyes looked over every aspect of the unknown tom -- who is he, and why is he here? A low growl rumbled in her throat to mirror her distress of the situation as she waited to learn more about this stranger.. is he friend, or foe? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ( REQUIEM AETERNAM,) ❝ DONA EIS DOMINE ❞ [size0]( word count ) 341 ( status ) Bard ( outfit ) insert picture! ( place ) starry pier ( notes ) ( credits ) ( m u f f i n ) of Caution! |

Bard's ears twitched as the seagull suddenly took flight. He turned just in time to see it take off, leaving he and the queen behind. And the female cat had noticed him. Her body was tense and her eyes glared at him in open hostility. He lowered his head to better look her in the face, ears springing forward in a full stance of attentiveness. "Who are you?" The question was a snarl. She was hardly very friendly and gracious... though Bard somewhat understood. He had come upon her without notice; he had been trying not to interrupt her fishing. That apparently backfired ferociously. Ah well. Time for damage control. "I'm sorry for startling you,"he said, keeping his body relaxed and open. "I'm Bard. I'm just a wanderer." He smiled pleasantly at her, hoping to sooth her anxiety. His ears relaxed and he tried to keep things casual. "I didn't want to interrupt your hunt,"he said, inclining his head toward the water. He had never been very good at catching aquatic prey. He was better suited to the land, even if he could swim. His clumsiness was only magnified in the water and the last time he tried to catch a swimming meal, he'd fallen into the water. Not at all a good impression on the young female he'd been trying to impress at the time. ... it didn't look like he'd leave much of a good impression on this queen either. She looked like she'd rather he just disappear. Maybe he could get her to warm up to him some. It was worth a try; she smelled like other cats so she must be part of a pride. It was in his best interest to leave a good impression on pride cats so his head wouldn't end up on someone's shit list. "What's your name?" Word: 300 |

It was strange, in her travels she has never seen a stray cat so calm and friendly towards unknown cats, and in the back of her mind she questioned how he had managed to survive with such an easy going attitude. Filling her lungs with the scent around her, she could tell that this tom had smells of the seas of the coast, and the trees of the mountain -- this cat was a wanderer and was obviously no pride cat. With clouded mystery being shed with light of knowledge of who this cat is, Marlo's tensed body calmed with relief from threat of the unknown. His body remained calm and nonthreatening, "this cat offers me no harm." As she began to approach him, her slender paws fell quietly as a shadow on the moldy pier walk way, her once fierce eyes now mirrored her confusion as to why he would approach a strange cat in the middle of a hunt. But before she had time to think of a question to ask Bard, her thoughts was cut short... Though her wary nature fought at the idea of revealing her name, she knew that it would be best to make friends when you can and to keep your enemies few and far between. Now was a time to make a friend.. Clearing her thought before her dark voice spoke, "My name is Marlo. I am a hunter of a pride." Stopping in her tracks a few feet from Bard, a deep sigh of air blew through Marlo's ebon nose, releasing all of the tension that she housed earlier as she no longer needed it. She sat on her haunches as the rising sun bared down on Marlo's dark coffee colored coat, and glistened at an angle in her startling eyes -- making them look like precious gem stones shining in the night's sky. A meek, cool breeze came by and danced in her fur -- a soft purr tickled as her sleek tail wrapped around the front of her body and rested on the tops of her front paws.. She waited for this tom to reveal more about himself and why he decided to watch her as she hunted fish.. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ( REQUIEM AETERNAM,) ❝ DONA EIS DOMINE ❞ ( word count ) 394 ( status ) Bard ( outfit ) insert picture! ( place ) starry pier ( notes ) ( credits ) ( m u f f i n ) of Caution! ![]() if i don't say this now i will surely break [size0]AS I'M LEAVING THE ONE I WANT TO TAKE. FORGIVE THE URGENCY BUT HURRY UP AND WAIT. my heart has started to separate "Baaaard, I wanna catch fish!" A large dark-tabby cat padded from behind Bard, his tail held aloft in the air like a bushy, feather-duster waving in the sea-breeze. His laid-back pace caused his body to bob side to side, as if he was walking with a beat in his head. Basil didn't have a care in the world, and for the first time, he finally got a good look at the pier. For living in the mountains for so long, this trip was an exciting one for this Maine Coon. "Wow! The sea! It looks a lot wider up close," he mewled as he got nearer, then finally saw what he stumbled into. A dark coffee-colored she-cat sat across them with piercing golden eyes. He was just in time to hear her introduce herself. Basil stared back curiously, his ears flicked to Bard and back at this strange she-cat. Was this one of those crazy she-cats that Bard talked about the other day? No, that can't be, they would be turning their tails and running. "Hi!" Basil greeted jauntily, his signature wide smile plastered across his face. "I'm Basil! What pride do you come from?" The young tom was poking his nose where he shouldn't be, but he couldn't help it. Bright, green eyes twinkled with great curiousity as he watched this dark, regal feline. There doesn't seem to be anything 'evil' about her, not that Basil could detect that if he first met a cat. His gaze turned to the great blue-green sea, to which he approached nearer and nearer to. "Wow, I can see the fish down there!" he mewed in awe. Basil's eyes followed the little anchovies that wiggled underwater, like they were flying smoothly under dark, moving glass. He was silent for a few seconds until mumbling, "They're quite small.." oh, oh, be my baby WHAT'S MINE IS YOURS TO LEAVE OR TAKE. WHAT'S MINE IS YOURS TO MAKE YOUR OWN. i'll look after you tag. Bard's ear flicked back an he twisted his body around in time to see Basil bound up the pier. He smiled at the feline's jaunty behavior, finding the Maine Coon's happiness extremely contagious. His stumpy tail gave a wiggle and it wasn't the first time he wished he had a longer tail like his mother. His mother had given him spots instead of a tail though. He did wonder what his father looked like but having never met the tom, it was all a bit of a mystery; his mother said he looked a lot like him though. He stood and followed after Basil as the younger but nearly larger cat peered into the water. "They're sardines,"he explained. "They have a very potent taste made stronger by humans; they like to make them really really salty." His muzzle wrinkled before he turned back to Marlo. Tilting his head to her in polite greeting, he said,"Its a pleasure to meet you, Marlo." Basil had already asked the main question he wanted to know so it saved Bard some trouble. But he couldn't help but glance back into the blue depths at the tiny, swimming fish. "You were quite good at catching them,"he said. "Maybe you could help my young friend out?" He looked back at her and laughed a little. "I can't catch fish,"he said, unabashedly. It was a talent Bard had never personally honed as generally he avoided places with a high water content. He'd been to the sea and he'd crossed its depths twice but most of his meals on those occasions had been stolen out of the chum buckets. Any other time, his traveling meals were small rodents or birds. And one or two bats if he could catch one off guard. The morning sun was higher now and the sky was a mixture of bright orange and pink. The cold blue of night had receded to the opposite horizon as the sun got higher and higher, growing stronger with each passing minute. The moon was nowhere to be seen; Bard could only assume that it had gone to bed already. Word: 352 |

Planting her paws hard on the wooden planks, her tail unwrapped itself from around her body and began to twitch irritably -- this cat's loudness and child-like whimsy rubbed Marlo the wrong way. The tom had a huge grin plastered on his features along with a jaunty bounce to his step, sending Marlo to recoil further away from this perky tom. Turning her back to him, she began cleaning her face as thoughts of how to sneak off danced in her head. She remained quite for some time as she reflected on plans to sneak away, but was outraged for every plan she imagined ended with Basil and Bard following right behind her. Nevertheless, with all rainy days there is a rainbow somewhere -- perhaps she will be able to make an ally in the coming battle. It can never hurt to have too many friends. Marlo cleared her throat before turning around to walk over to join Bard and Basil, who where now at the edge of the pier and sat gazing at a watery world that they where both where about as naive to as Basil was to this world on land. Marlo did plan to answer Basil's question but it would appear that Bard had already answered it while she was previously sitting and planning an escape just a few moments earlier. "Sure I'll help you out with fishing, Marlo answered back as she took a seat next to Bard on the pier. "The trick is to find one fish and focus on it, as she said this her golden eyes found one sardine swirling the salty waters just a paw's reach from Marlo. Her eyes flitting here and there, following the sharp and fluid motion of the fish.. "And when you feel comfortable with the movements of the fish you..." Marlo's slender front leg shot out in the water, her talons digging into the slippery flesh before yanking it out of it's home. She tossed the still living fish behind Basil and Bard, away from the edges of the piet to keep it from flopping back into the sea.. ".. you will find that hunting fish is easier than you think." Sitting on her haunches she licked the salty taste of sardine blood off of her talons, a soft purr massaged her vocals as she did so. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ( REQUIEM AETERNAM,) ❝ DONA EIS DOMINE ❞ ( word count ) 440 ( status ) open ( outfit ) insert picture! ( place ) starry pier ( notes ) I create a neutral opening in a neutral place for anyone of any pride to come in and rp with Marlo. FORGIVE THE URGENCY BUT HURRY UP AND WAIT. my heart has started to separate Basil turned his head to Bard as his companion explained to him about these tiny fishes. "Sardines, huh?" he echoed. He stretched a paw down tentatively unto the surface of the water, dipping it and swirling it around as if he became more interested in playing with the little morsels instead of catching them. The two year old thought to himself, I must catch a dozen of these before I feel full! Taking his arm back from the waters, Basil looked back at Marlo as Bard asked for advice on how to catch the sardines. The dark tabby watched Marlo sit down next to Bard, clinging to every word she said as if she was the grand professional of fishing. Basil looked into her focused golden eyes, admiring how concentrated she was in the task until looking back at the briny sea where she was about to catch sardines. Suddenly, a dark paw shot into the water! With one swipe, Basil watched with his mouth agape as Marlo threw one of the sardines to land. It thrashed about behind them, flopping around and gasping for water. "Wwwoooow!" Basil gasped in awe. If he could, he would be clapping right now! "That was so coo-" The young tom paused as his eyes were fixed to Marlo, who was licking her claws in such a manner after her demonstration. Her purring sent a little shock along his spine, until he felt his ears turn warm. It was only now did he realized that Marlo was quite a pretty she-cat - her graceful hunting, that smooth dark brown coat that seemed to shine and those alluring yellow eyes.. Forcing to relax his shoulders, Basil shook his head awake to finish his sentence. "T-That was really cool," he mewed quietly, "U-um, I want to try!" With that, he quickly turned his gaze away from Marlo and back to the sea. Anymore staring at her and Basil felt like his heart would drum so loud for everyone to see. Bard smiled at his young friend and his eagerness to pick up a new skill. Though he had a sneaking suspicion that there was an underlying reason. He chuckled softly to himself and moved to sit off to the side, allowing the pair to chat. In his mind's eye, he was thinking over his variety of crushes and affairs; there had been quite a few but the one that came to mind most often was his first true affections. The nick in his ear tingled at the memories. Somehow, Bard had a feeling that Basil's relationship would progress... smoother than his had. He flicked his nicked ear back before standing and wandering over to the flopping fish. It lay gasping upon the pier, little fins flipping and flicking and gills working desperately for air. He felt bad for its suffering and carefully hooked his claws into the tiny gills, dragging it back toward Marlo. It was her catch, therefore her meal. "Here you are,"he said, smiling. "Thank you for the fishing lesson." And he was grateful. Perhaps now he could taste the flavor of freshly caught fish as opposed to that of the chum buckets. He did find himself watching Basil quite often. "Don't fall in,"Bard warned. "There are bigger fish than the sardines that sometime lurk around. Fish big enough to eat cats." He turned and grinned at Marlo, voice taking on a spooky edge that contrasted greatly with his expression. "They would love a big hairball like you,"he said. He was merely playing of course. Most of the fish he was referring to lived further out into the ocean. There were a few that would venture so close to shore but Bard doubted that they were around this early in the morning. He winked playfully at Marlo, mostly trying to get Basil's goat, teasing him like an older brother would. Word: 308 |

Marlo's body recoiled away from the two toms as they talked amongst one another, Bard obviously picking up on the same thing Marlo did as he began to make subtle jokes toward Basil's feelings. This only made the situation more real, Marlo's mind began to spin and race, a hidden flush colored her cheeks behind her dark fur.. she must get out of there. With a wink from a teasing Bard, Marlo's paws immediately her came alive with a jolt of energy and carried her toward the in-land. Without a word she passed Bard and Basil, her quickened pace fell hard on the wooden planks causing them to creak as she trotted into a jog. Her widened eyes darting forward as if she saw something in a boat by a few yards from the pier. As she reached the shore, her light paw prints marked the sand and trailed to the nearest place she could find to her space from the strange toms. The small fisher's boat was beached, the white and red paint pealed and flaked on the sand, while it's wooden frame wasted away in rot. Near the bottom, eaten away by decay was a hold large enough for Marlo to press her body in and hide inside. Eyes flashing in the dark abyss, the shadows of the dying boat wrapped Marlo in comfort hidden away from prying eyes and unwanted feelings. Slow, heavy drips of salted water dripped from the water-logged vessel here and there, some landing on her ears, others landing on her back. She jumped and trembled in the cold, but it was better than to be out there with the toms. ![]() if i don't say this now i will surely break AS I'M LEAVING THE ONE I WANT TO TAKE. FORGIVE THE URGENCY BUT HURRY UP AND WAIT. my heart has started to separate Basil didn't notice Bard walking away, leaving him and Marlo alone for several seconds. His eyes were still fixed at slippery fish who wove in and out in the water, and instead of fishing he was more of sorting his feelings out. His body was quite stiff, imagining that Marlo was studying him with those enchanting, mysterious eyes. Basil probably looked like a fool - a mere kitten. This dark she-cat held herself with dignity, she was way out of his league. Basil did finally turn his head when his sandy-brown colored friend started talking about even bigger fish. It was good news to him at first, but his jaw dropped when they could eat cats. "Ehhhh?!" Basil widened his eyes, a mix of fear and disbelief and shuffled himslf a few steps away from the edge. He imagined a giant-sized sardine jumping out of the water, chomping into him with a single gulp. Basil shivered with a frown. These things were just babies then! Suddenly, his ears picked up the sound of dashing paws, and stared in dismay as Marlo ran off. "No wait--!" Basil mewed, outstretching a white paw as if it would bring the she-cat back. Was she turned off by them? By him? Too much prying of personal space? Was he too obvious? Questions spiraled in Basil's head and he felt his ears slightly droop as the shadow colored she-cat kept running. After she ducked into an old, abandoned boat, the Maine Coon slowly turned to Bard with the look that screamed 'What did I do?' For that moment, Basil felt very, very small. What should they do? Things seemed to be going swimmingly to Bard with Basil loosening up and he himself in a good mood... at leas they seemed good until they're female friend decided to make a run for it. The older tom perked his ears as Marlo made a break for it, confusion clear on his face as well. What was wrong? As far as he could tell, the pair of them had been very gentlemanly so it couldn't be anything that they'd said to her to upset her. An ear flicked back and Bard looked back to his companion to see his whole form wilt. It reminded Bard a little too sharply of his first romance, albeit Basil's rejection was far less harsh than his own had been. He looked away from the younger tom and began to walk at a slow and easy gait, heading for Marlo's chosen hiding spot. He walked slowly to give her time to breath and relax maybe. "Basil, would you like to come?"he called over his shoulder, already half way down the pier. The sand was still a bit cool to the touch and the coarse granules against his paw pads felt nice. Bard followed the skittering line of paw prints on the beach and slowly came to stand in front of the darkened hole leading to the inner sanctuary of the boat's hull. He lowered himself to his belly and inched forward, golden eyes searching for and finding equally golden eyes. "Everything okay in there?"he asked gently, keeping his body to the sandy beach. There were particles in his brown coat and his fur was slightly damp. He looked back, searching for Basil before turning back to the hidden coffee colored cat. "I'm sorry if we offended you,"he continued. "Won't you come out and allow me and my young friend apologize? Please?" Bard tilted his head to the right and looked at her with a small smile, eyes pleading and gentle. Marlo's trembling endeared him greatly and he really did want to console her. Or perhaps, allow Basil to. Word: 341 |

She wanted to run and be free of this, but soon Bard was outside and peering in with kind eyes. Though his eyes were kind, they pried in on her vulnerable moment, and molested her feelings -- making her feel like a trapped animal. Her anxiety welled, and her sleek hair stood ridged on her back -- a signal of a warning to Bard. Tiny nervous meows squeaked out before dashing out of her small hole in the boat and back into the daylight. Jolting passed Bard, Marlo's salt perfumed fur warmed in the sun's rays, her slender paws kicked sand in the air in her hurried gait. Her nerves still holding her hair up in a tall ridge. Now a few feet from Bard she turned around to face him, "There is no apology needed, she glanced over her shoulder to look at Basil who was still at the pier before turning back toward Bard, "We all have our emotions." Marlo knew that Bard would understand that she saw Basil's feelings for her just a moment earlier, he may not understand her frightful hiding from the young tom's feelings the way that she did, but she did not care to spell things out for him. She did not care to explain that she did not know Basil... did not trust him.. Trust... And, in that moment an idea hit her.. Taking several deep calming breathes, her fur finally subsided and relaxed -- no good cat has ever made a good decision while pressed in a corner, and she would not let these hapless toms be the ones to make her feel caged. Sitting back on her haunches she began to clean the salt from her fur, now was a time to earn allies.. perhaps she can use Basil's feelings in her favor.. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ( REQUIEM AETERNAM,) ❝ DONA EIS DOMINE ❞ ( word count ) 332 ( status ) Basil and Bard ( outfit ) insert picture! ( place ) starry pier ( notes ) Marlo be planning to play Basil( credits ) ( m u f f i n ) of Caution! ![]() if i don't say this now i will surely break AS I'M LEAVING THE ONE I WANT TO TAKE. FORGIVE THE URGENCY BUT HURRY UP AND WAIT. my heart has started to separate Aftering moping to himself for a few moments, the fluffy young tom reluctantly dragged himself with his mutt companion as they trotted toward an abandoned boat where Marlo confined herself in. Each pawstep to him was like walking in red hot coals, as if he felt like he was regretting to follow Bard for the sake of confronting this pridecat. However, he decided that perhaps they did owe her an apology for invading her space. While his kind friend coaxed the she-cat out of the boat, Basil positioned himself behind the older tom. His ears drummed at each passing second as they waited for Marlo to respond. When she finally did came out from her hiding place, muttering a few words in reply to Bard's. The silence went on as the two gave the dark she-cat time to organize her thoughts, until she started grooming the sea salt from her fur. The large kit knew one thing, and that was when a cat cleans itself it meant it was to calm itself down. A truce. Basil took a deep breath before taking this opportunity to speak as well. "I-I still need to apologize too," he meowed as he sat down across her with Bard. "I.. I just thought that you were pretty-" Uh oh. Quickly, Basil caught his tongue before it let fly again and his ears became hot as he tried to change his sentences all over. "That you were pretty awesome at fishing." He finished. Yes, perfect. No one would ever know! Now if only Marlo wasn't looking, the dark tabby would have been breathing frantically for air because he was simply drowning in his own feelings. Little did he know that he was being read as easily as reading the movements of a mouse. "I-Is there anything," Basil added nervously, "Anything that we could do to make it up to you..?" While he didn't know how Bard would feel about this, the Maine Coon felt that he owed Marlo for making her feel uncomfortable. He wouldn't know how, but if there was a way then Basil would gladly do it. oh, oh, be my baby WHAT'S MINE IS YOURS TO LEAVE OR TAKE. WHAT'S MINE IS YOURS TO MAKE YOUR OWN. i'll look after you tag.
