The Basics

Name: Bard

Age: 3 Years

Gender: Male

Breed: Mutt; there is some manx in there but other than, largely unknown.

Sexuality: Pansexual

Pride: Gypsy

Rank: The Reader; leader of others.

The Knitty Gritty

Personality: Bard is a very calm, easy going cat and generally enjoys the peace and quiet. He spends a lot of his time alone, moving from place to place and dodging trouble as best he can. This fact by no means makes him unsocialable; Bard enjoys the company of other felines, even if he doesn't always get it.

Many find him to be open minded and excellent at listening. Bard enjoys stories, both telling them and hearing them so any chance he has to help someone else with their problems is a welcomed one. Especially if he may take their woes and learn a lesson from them himself.

Bard, however, tends to keep his own problems to himself, not wanting to trouble anyone else with them. He is also susceptible to moodiness and depression. He can be unsure of himself and at times, worries he's more harm than good to those who approach him with issues. He is also deeply saddened by the loss of his original owner and talk of the humans and their fate can be a bit of a sore spot for him.

Many find him untrustworthy; he is a cat with no loyalties to anyone or anything. They're left without an actual label for him, no way to compartmentalize him in their heads. Before the downfall of man, Bard had easily gotten along with humans and other strays. Now, however, he is just a wanderer who refuses to tie himself down.

Bard is more a lover than a fighter, in the truest sense of the word. While by no means lecherous, he does have a tendency toward flirting and... perhaps unintentionally leading others on. He means no harm but he enjoys appreciating the beauty in the world and that means also in his fellow cats of both gender, then so be it. Unfortunately, his flirty nature has a tendency to lead him into needing him to fight or flee... and usually, he will choose to flee.

He has commitment issues and tries to make sure that all of his lovers understand that he isn't a permanent fixture. Just the thought of being able to leave whenever he likes and go wherever he wants makes his skin crawl. He doesn't mean to be irresponsible. It just happens that way.

Bard's temper is very low; its hard to get under his skin. He reasons that if he let everyone bother him then he'd be a basket case. He, therefore, lets no one bother him. He just lets it slide off his back instead of blowing up at every little thing.

Bard's morality is... tricky. While he isn't evil, he isn't good either. He fully understands that the world is not black and white and accepts this fact gracefully. Therefore, while he doesn't always do what is considered morally right, he will do what is considered logically right. In other words, he will do the thing that is necessary, no matter how grisly it may be. Sometimes that requires killing someone, sometimes it requires doing things that many would consider dirty... but in the end, it is what's necessary. He feels, deep down, that he must do what is necessary and that, at times, eats him up inside.

Intelligent and world wary from his travels, Bard is a plethora of information on the now extinct human race. While reciting information about gone two legged mammals saddens him, he is also eager to share his knowledge with anyone who wants to know. He even knew how to read a few human words though... his knowledge on the subject was very basic. With them gone, however, perhaps he'll have the opportunity to expand his knowledge... though it'll be difficult without hearing the words spoken by the humans.

Appearance: Bard is fairly neutral in color, which means he blends in pretty well with the forest around him. His coat is largely made up of varying shades of brown, his main pelt color being pale brown. He does have fairly distinctive markings, his hind quaters and back being dotted with large darker colored spots that meld into a strip of brown of similar color down his back. The strip starts up between his ears and makes its way all the way to his tail, which is very short and manx-like. The fur of his tail is darker than his main pelt color and spots. His ears are the same shade as his spots but are tipped with a darker shade of brown, much like his toes are on all four feet. His muzzle is also a slighter darker brown. In his left ear is a notch from a battle with another cat.

His body structure is rather thick and heavy set; he's a hearty feline with a heavy bone structure. This doesn't leave him as the most graceful feline but it does mean that he's very sturdy and powerful. His fur is short but on the bristly side, not as soft and smooth as it could be.

His eyes are round and soft with a warm golden hue.

Skills: Highly intelligent and a born survivor.

History: Bard was born on Bellview Island before humans extinction, in the home of an elderly woman named Dorothy Wilkes to his mother, Sadie. Sadie was Dorothy's constant companion and extremely loyal to the old woman, staying by her side through thick and thin. The only time she ever strayed was when Bard's father, a wandering rogue, came to her.

Over the course of a few weeks, the two became intimately close, Sadie quickly becoming infatuated with the charming feline with the short tail. It was no surprise when they mated; however, it was a surprise when the rogue expected Sadie to follow him to parts unknown. Still fiercely loyal to her human, she painfully told him know and watched him leave her behind, broken hearted.

The grief was only allowed to fester for a short time. Forty-five days after her mating, Sadie birthed three kittens. Her small, frail body, however, only lead to the survival of a single kit whom was promptly named Bard by Dorothy's live in granddaughter, Eliza. Eliza quickly grew attached to the tiny, brown kitten and from day one, she'd often come and sit with Sadie and Bard and read to them.

As Bard grew older and more adventurous, he would seek Eliza out and spend his afternoons in her lap. She often continued to read out loud to him, happy to have his companionship. The two were very close...

... but as Bard grew older, it became apparent that he had his father's wandering spirit. At six months, he was already venturing outside, only returning for story time with Eliza. By eight months, he was in the woods, chasing young rabbits and mice. By ten months, he was itching for travel but torn.

Bard loved both his mother and Eliza dearly. But his paws called for him to seek the outside world. It was his mother who finally gave him the nudge he needed. She told him to go out and find his way; she would care for Eliza and Dorothy.

Saddened but bolstered, Bard stayed for one more story time with Eliza before disappearing from their lives all together. He set out on his journey at two months shy of a year old. It was over the course of his journey that he met many interesting felines and humans.

One such was another traveling tom that went by the name Vagrant. Vagrant was loud and rowdy, unlike Bard, and enjoyed causing trouble. He was Bard's first cat friend and also his first earnest love. Vagrant and Bard traveled together for many months, until Bard was a year and a half. However, Vagrant didn't react well to Bard's feelings.

He and Bard were quickly drawn into a tussle, Bard gaining a knick his right ear from the battle and a scar on his heart. He fled from Vagrant's side, stung and feeling lost and confused. He continued his travels blindly, pushing the ache to the bottom of his heart. During this time of great depression, Bard had many lovers and one night stands.

As time wore on, Bard decided it was time to head home for a visit, needing time away from the harsh world. The journey home was long but the closer he got to the only place he called home, the more eager he became. He was two and a half by the time he got home... and what he found made him ill.

Both Dorothy and Eliza were gone, as was the majority of their neighbors. They had fallen victim to the fast spreading virus. His mother had long since left the now empty home, her whereabouts still unknown to Bard. He was sure she was alive...

Bard spent the next six months lingering around his old owner's home, watching as the world around him changed without human interference. He knew that the prides were forming but he was uninterested in joining their battle. Instead, he now spent his time wandering the island, waiting and watching the events unfold.

Family: Sadie-Mother-Presumed Alive
Rogue Tom-Father-Unknown

Strengths: Hearty and powerful; clever

Weaknesses: Unwilling to fight without good reason; slow and clumsy

Try-Out [Leader Characters Only]

Reason Why your Character Should be Leader: Bard is a kind, patient soul who generally gets along with most felines. He is understanding and good at listening, which is an excellent trait for a leader to have. He has enough wordly knowledge to make decent decisions while still being young enough to sire possible heirs. What he lacks in grace and agility, he more than makes up for with a tactical mind and excellent diplomacy. He isn't one for fighting unless necessary and doesn't rush to quick and rash decisions.
