Gryphons

Save for a few sparse individual survivors, the species is considered effectively extinct. *Read: Contest prizes & Plot events, not available in RP shop yet.*

The Gryphon leaders and their four offspring are currently living in Lomira in the company of Alistiana Sahalon, in protection of the royal family.

Noveltellian Gryphons (And their miniature, dwarf variants) have been a noble race of beings as long as anyone can remember. While not as ancient as the unicorns, it is thought that the two races have existed side by side for much longer than humans or even elves have been around. Elementally speaking, they are second behind unicorns, (Who are themselves below Dragons and Phoenixes, making Gryphons the fourth strongest in elements). They are quite happy to, unlike most unicorns, bond to a human or elf as a life-long partner. Those bonded to a gryphon can still bond to a dragon OR a phoenix (But not both, under normal situations). They do tolerate other lesser bonded creatures, such as dwarfs (dragon/gryphon/phoenix), Dragonhounds, Aesullian Tragendire, Iaramiran elvencats and so on, but typically can become jealous if their bonded attempts to bond to more than two (Itself included) non (Normal sized) Dragons/Phoenixes.

That being said, these creatures are often seen as a proud race. Not the typical eagle-lions of old fairy tail stories, they are not truly half eagle and half lion, though their bodies do resemble a feline while being avian in nature. From the top of their proud heads to the tip of their tails, they are feathered- no fur anywhere to be found. Like some kinds of birds of prey, their limbs are covered in feathers up to a certain point (This point where feathers give way to the semi scaled arms tends to vary in individuals), this point is usually just past the elbow, (Sometimes all the way to the wrist), and ends in longer feathers usually. (While all Gryphons sport the physical traits of birds of prey, including corvidae, their color scheme can mimic another, non raptorial bird.)

The talons of a gryphon are another matter entirely. Unlike any bird of prey in number of digits, they have four fingers and one thumb, which makes them capable of manipulating objects well enough, though their talons can get in the way to some degree, despite being able to retract. (Though not all the way, some portion of the talon remains out of the slots, similar to cats, However; the anatomy is different.) The thumb digit can also somewhat rotate to a back-facing position (Better than a human hand can at least). Their feet on their hind legs appear somewhat elongated, and though the toes are long, they also have quite sharp talons- But what makes these feet impressive is that, though they are wholly nonhuman, they can stand upright as well as any humanoid can (And often do when they feel like it!) stand and walk upon two limbs as easily as they go about on four. They can be impressively tall, and look down on the tallest elves, (Though the tallest centaurs are still taller than them).

Their bodies in general have a feline overall shape to them, typically quite long and sleek, though other more bulky bodies are known. Upon their heads, many Gryphons have a crest of feathers, from slight tufts to full on crests. All Gryphons have ears (Like birds do)- The actual ear is a pin point under the feathers, but they all posses several long tufts which rise and fall with their various emotions, as do all their feathers for that matter. Their beaks come in many bird shapes but are almost always a bird of prey (Jays, crows, birds they feed on animals or fish in general- Even owl and falcon Gryphons sometimes exist!). Unlike birds, they have an area of flexibility in the skin on their faces along the edge of the beaks Example here, by Larry Dixon which allows them to be surprisingly expressive- combined with their ability to use their brows much like a person can, combined with the degrees at which feathers may be lifted or pulled down tight, they are quite capable of letting their feelings be seen, or unseen. The inner edges of their beaks also have quasi-teeth, which are sharp and more suited for tearing and shredding (With the help of their hooked beaks). Typically, they do not chew their food but swallow chunks whole. Some gryphons (But not all) have a row of feathers along their backs in a similar crest-like fashion to those on their heads.

Their wings come in most any shape a birds do, and are always strictly feathered. At the base of their tails, similar to air dragons, is a more atypical bird tail, which can be the usual rounded affair of most birds of prey, long like a macaw, or whatever. Extending out underneath this is a long tail that is covered in feathers and ends in a feathery 'plume'. In flight, the feathers upon these tails can extend outward to catch the air and help the gryphon in the air. When not in flight, they can be somewhat confused with the lion tail, likely where the half bird half cat mythos started.

Quite adept at elemental magics, it was once said that there were even mages among their kind, but no one has seen one of the arcane in a long, long time. Oddly enough, Gryphons seem capable of birthing practically any element from any element, though it is not known why. Rarely, a Gryphon may appear to be without an element, though have signatures of having the energy of possessing an element. It is thought these individuals may in fact be Arcane element, but with no mages to study under, their power goes unknown and unable to work anything. Most assume elementless life- These are so rare however, that they are nearly unheard of. OOC Read: They are not open to be made. All other elements seem to have the potential to show up, though a few have never been documented in Gryphons (Technology, Radiation, for examples).

Color-wise, most Gryphons seem to resemble birds of prey, though not always, and even when they do, they are not always specifically representative of a single real raptor, but may be made up of many similar colorations or patterns. Their elements do not always express themselves physically, though sometimes do appear in the colors that are common for those elements. Their genders do not play a roll in their colors (Or feather ornamentation)- A female can be just as gorgeously colored and patterned as a male and vice versa. They can also have some feline patterning to their coats, as well, from faint brindling all the wat to striped patterns and so on, even blending the markings of feline and avian- Though keep in mind there is no 'split' area, IE they don't have a 'bird half' with bird patterns and a 'feline' half with feline patterns. It is usually intermingled if both are present on the same Gryphon.

Size-wise, Gryphons are a bit unusual in that they come naturally in a variety of sizes- your standard Gryphon (IE, non dwarfs) typically range between standing four to eight feet at their proud shoulders, though it is most common to see 5-6 ft at the shoulder- anything above six is considered rarer. At nine to ten feet tall, one is considered a 'titan' gryphon, which is astronomically rare. Standing bipedal, Gryphons are typically about nine feet tall at the top of the head, but can be up to almost twelve feet tall (Very unusual). Much of a gryphon's length is in their tail, which is commonly as long as the Gryphons main body- They can total from between fifteen to a bit above twenty (Give or take, pending tail tip ornamentation). The very longest ones are typically maximum of 35 ft- most of which is tail at that point (Again this is more of a titan Gryphon and therefore would be quite rare).

Dwarf Gryphons fall into two groups- the standard Dwarf and the Micro-Dwarf. * standard and micro dwarf Gryphons are the same price in the RP shop* Normal Dwarf Gryphons stand about between ten and fourteen inches (About the size of a house cat, 20-35 inches long, pending feather plume tips), and the maximum 'dwarf' Gryphons are up to 2 feet at the shoulder, and upward of fifty to sixty inches total long (again, tail pending). When these stand bipedal, they are just under three feet up to four feet tall, typically no taller. (IE, they're about the size of a cat all the way up to something like a tall German Shepherd dog).

Micro-Dwarf Gryphons are a whole other level of tiny, on all fours they stand at minimum three inches, nine inches long, and stand bipedal at six inches tall. The tallest a Dwarf can be and be still considered a micro-dwarf is seven inches tall (on all fours), Bipedal being maximum one foot, while they are total maximum length is about 19-20 inches give or take. Much longer and they are no longer considered 'micros'.

Socially and personality wise, Gryphons,are usually pretty relaxed and focused, though as with all Sentient beings, the potential for unique personalities are endless. Many of them have a healthy sense of pride, and are easily insulted when it is insinuated that they are mere creatures or animals. Being that they can speak quite well, and have their wits about them, and are their own people, being compared to common animals or being called a beast can end poorly for the fool who makes such a mistake. On the social scale of things, Gryphons quite enjoy one another's company, and often live in communities that center around a designated leader (This is often, as with dragons, the 'titan' Gryphon in a given group but not always.) Gryphons mate for life, though up until the point where they pick a permanent mate they are not unknown to mingle, though they do not have offspring from such encounters. (Gryphons will themselves into fertile seasons, and so do not have to worry about unwanted kits). Once a pair of Gryphons have chosen one another, their bond is nigh inseparable, nothing short of death parts them, and even then, as with many birds, losing their loved ones can have dreadful effects on the remaining survivors mind. If they manage to survive, they rarely take another mate (But it is not entirely unheard of).

Gryphons, despite being avian in all things, surprisingly bear live young much like felines do- usually bearing three to five quite small (Compared to themselves) kits. For the first couple months of their lives, gryphons are raised by their parents up to the point where they can function without immediate aid. They then decide whether or not they wish to attempt to bond. Though Gryphons in general are quite happy being on their own, they do see benefits to bonding in companionship with humanoid people, and quite a few in the past have secured such bonds. Despite their size, standard (The largest variety) Gryphons are capable of carrying riders with apparently no issues. It is not known where their strength stems from, but it may be magical in nature. It seems they may be capable of carrying at least their own weight to twice their own weight.

For all their bravery, strength and courage, the Gryphons, both bonded and unbonded groups were all but wiped out ages ago. They suffered long lasting and slow deaths in the viral war. Due to the slower, long lasting epidemic they ended up with, (Which surprisingly, did not effect or spread to other species, not that others weren't suffering from other entirely different diseases) the Gryphon race scattered to the winds in an attempt to avoid spreading it to those who didn't have it. Most of them died, as no cure was found, even the curatives of dragons weren't working well. Around the same time, it is thought nearly every Gryphon that didn't have it simultaneously either died or vanished, to where, no one knows. What is known is that the virus that once decimated the species has since been wiped out, but it was too little, too late.

Any gryphons still remaining in the world today are descendants of survivors or those who were bonded with royalty, and would not or could not leave with their fellow survivors. Gryphons who managed to survive the First plague wars were exceedingly rare- and their fertility suffered. Most pairs could not manage to have offspring, or if they did, did not carry to term. Slowly, over the last ten to twenty thousand years, the gryphons died out. Those offspring that did survive were hyper immune to the diseases of the past and potentially the future as well. Currently, there are too few left to effectively save their own race- Fewer even than the unicorns, numbering at most in the twenties. It is increasingly more difficult for them to find mates due to increasingly being aware of who all they are directly related to, though fortunately they not only kept records of all survivors, but they also managed to avoid inbreeding. Unfortunately for them, due to this, there are now very few remaining.

It is not known why, but all surviving Gryphons live in and around Lomira, with quite a few having ended up in the company of the Royal Family and Guardians of the city, though they do travel as they wish. The Leaders and their children often accompany the Royal Family (Empress Alistiana and Prince Zemal specifically) wherever they go.

Number-wise, about half the surviving Gryphons are the standard large variety. (around ten or eleven), the remaining ten or eleven are various sizes of dwarf, with only a couple being micro-dwarfs. ) This fragile species is protected almost as much as Unicorns are, though they prefer not to refer to themselves as fragile, as if they know something they keep secret from all other races, even their non gryphon bonds.

As far as any outsiders are concerned, the sad truth is, there are perhaps only two family groups of standard sized Gryphons left- At least four being blood relatives (The leader's family with their four offspring make up six total) and one other family, probably two older adults and three offspring, for the other five) (11 total known standard Gryphons, though there may be a few individuals scattered elsewhere). Despite having fewer numbers, they do not breed very often anymore, perhaps to avoid perpetuating inevitability, or else, avoiding inbreeding. It is assumed that Gryphon pride may be why the remaining few do not seem concerned with their apparent imminent demise.

Messenger Birds
  • These birds can be purchased in the RP shop for 50G each, or 200G for a flock of six! Just be sure to give each a name. They only need a short bio line for what colors they are, and if they have any personality quirks. They do not need a full huge bio, but are considered 'Other bonded creatures'!


Messenger birds, while related to Gryphons directly, are not themselves a species of Gryphon. They are very intelligent, but are only sub-sentient, being that they understand words in context and know themselves to be individuals. They have no elements, though it is thought that perhaps they all simply have the Sound element since they can repeat anything they hear exactly, up to an hours worth. These little birds come in any colors of the rainbow, though quite a lot of them are black with bright colored points on their wings. They resemble jays mixed with songbirds, and have tall crest feathers. They are opportunistic feeders and will eat pretty much any kind of food, from seeds and fruits to meats and insects. They are quite fond of sunflower seeds.

Historically, Messenger Birds have been used to send (surprise) messages between peoples, and even though technology has made them less worth keeping as true messenger senders, some people still keep them for their chatty nature and good personalities. The birds are quite common and were not wiped out by the virals. They make good pets and are not considered magical in nature despite their long memory and ability to mimic exact sounds they've heard or voices. They are easy to tame right out of the wild, and they are common in most cities. It is considered illegal to feed them junk foods as it makes them unhealthy, but people are welcome to feed them seeds or other proper foods. Interestingly enough, these birds do not leave waste, which is one reason it is thought they might be related to Gryphons, who have such advanced stomach acids, they can digest most anything and also do not typically leave waste. All one has to do to tame a Messenger Bird is offer it something it might like, such as fresh mango. They are readily tame and will fly to the offered hand. They are not known to bite, unless they are physically in danger of being hurt, and are smart enough to know whether or not someone is going to hurt them. It is considered cruel to clip their wings however, as they use them in daily life much like crows do.

It is not known how they find the locations of places they are sent, and this itself is considered a bit of a mystery, but may be related to them being given a mental image or idea of where someone might be. For instance, you cannot send a bird to a person if you don't know roughly where the person is. If you know the place they live, they will find it. You can send them to a place you know but have not been, and they will return. Their ability to mimic would be considered useful for spying, but the birds are just so very obvious, and tend to not be exactly quiet while they work over the words and sounds they're hearing. They are not permitted in counsel rooms, either. (such rooms have sound-element made sound barriers, as well.) Birds often return making silly chuckling and static noises if they are sent to spy on important meetings, even ones snuck into said rooms. (Their sounds usually give them away in any case). They can be useful pets, but in the modern world, people rely more on technology to spy.

They understand things they are told, up to a certain degree and are probably smarter than parrots but not smarter than a human. It is entirely possible they don't understand entirely everything they're asked to remember- They are in fact, useful for classes to record lessons if someone wants to record without machinery. (Which would technically be easier but who wants easier when you can be cool with a bird?) They are very soft and enjoy being petted. They are very trusting, but should a person be seen as dangerous to them, none of their kind will ever approach that person again, much like crows pass along information to one another, they recognize people who have harmed or killed their kind, even if none of the others were around to see it. While not considered 'magical' or 'elemental', in that they do not actively wield or use magic or elements, they may have a sort of mind-web, and may be aware of the others of their kind, making up a sort of network of individuals. They know when others are born or die, and are known to show up at hatchings of dragons as well as gryphon births. It is thought that they are related to Gryphons, given that Gryphons can understand them better than others, and are often found with several of the birds. (The birds, wild or tame, love hanging out with gryphons and dragons and even help preen them.). They also are fascinated by people with wings, which they will also attempt to help preen given the chance. They're adorable little chucklebirds in general and quite common.
