"Are you sure it's not too warm with your tail around it like that?" the mother dragon had asked.

Venria had half a mind to smack the air right then and there for daring to ask such a foolish question. Why don't you touch my tail yourself and find out, she wanted to snap, but no, such a thing would appear improper. Etharius was still a very new city, after all, and if one of their dragons were to attack a brooding mother, that would look awful for public relations. Instead, Venria forced herself to politely assure the brooding mother that an ice dragon's scales could freeze the skin off of elves or humans on occasion if the dragon so wished, against her own wishes. Dragons above, this job was frusterating sometimes, but it gave Venria access to what she wanted.

Thankfully, Venria had been relieved from her position a little bit earlier, and she had a chance to take a break before being assigned to care for a different egg. She was one of a few ice dragon hatchery attendants that had been gathered to ensure that ice eggs born to non-ice parents were able to survive to hatching. It was far from glamorous most of the time, and involved staring off into space or dealing with fussy parents more often than anything else, but there were some perks. One of these perks was access to the food carts that were set up on the sands. They were most active during the hatching, when the candidates were forced onto the sands for more than twenty-four hours, but there were a few available even before both for parents and for hatchery attendants like Venria.

The ice dragon procured a rather sizeable slab of meat and took it into the almost empty stands, away from the nests where parents might feel threatened by a strange dragon. She had eaten on the sands at first, until a particularly paranoid fire insisted that she didn't want a strange ice dragon "corrupting her children", whatever that meant. Most dragons were fairly reasonable, but there were a few mothers (and fathers, for that matter) that just seemed to have lost it. That was to be expected every year, really, but even moreso in a crazy hatching season like the one that had played out so far. Nobody wanted what happened to the two eggs during the touching to happen to their own eggs.

Venria breathed over her meal, making it crisper and colder than it had been when served. It felt so strange to have hot or even room temperature food slip down her throat, and so she'd made it a habit to ensure that her food was not particularly above her preferred body temperature. She consumed the meat fairly quickly- it was hardly more than a snack for her- before looking over the grounds from the relative safety of the stands. There were only a few people in the stands at this point, mostly riders or a few outsiders who were inside for whatever reason. It would undoubtedly fill more closer to the hatching, but for now, it was a safe place to hide away from the mothers below.

It was quiet, so wonderfully quiet, in this part of the stands. It was nice to just be alone, away from all the fussy couples and paranoid mothers. It was nice to revel in the quiet for just a moment, the nearest dragon several meters away and several feet below. Or at least, so it seemed.

Hatching season was upon them. Which meant, testy mothers and fathers all gathered around in one spot protecting the new life that had entered. The Ice rider huffed to himself, peeking about the stands as the pair moved. They didn’t want to be on the sands at all, with Kethrin’s high temper, conflicts could easily arise, but thankfully the ice dragon was mostly around to head off the irate male. They were here on a few tasks and They wouldn’t just abandon them. No. They would do it with all the grace that could be mustered. Ice flared up between his footsteps as the ice dragon moved. Easily moving in his humanoid form, Takura still towered over his rider with ease, not that Kethrin cared. A package tucked safely between his forearms looked unassuming, and hopefully would be the last one that they had to do here for a long while.

Takura watched as the male straightened his casual clothes that were mostly unassuming in color--khaki, and appropriate for the weather and job. He tried to straighten his tussled hair, but that hadn’t done much for the Silver-streaked black hair that had been cropped relatively short. Despite his attitude, Kethrin looked professional. “Relax, They won’t eat you.” Takure joked lightly, his own clawed hand reaching out to tussle it.

Kethrin shrugged him off, and rolled his eyes. “Anything could eat me if they so wished it. Just depends on how grouchy they are. Ugh. Hopefully this’ll be the last job here. I can’t stand being stuck in one place and around so many moody parents.” He kicked at the sand, carefully handling the package between his arms. “Thankfully, you are not one of them out there. I think I’d die.”

“You wouldn’t have died.” Takura huffed, rolling his eyes at the man, throwing the tiny tantrum like a three year old. To be honest, Takura had never really chased or won any flights, and hadn’t ever thought of participating. He had his hands full with his bonded, he would be even more distraught if Takura was the one to tie him down. Maybe someday, he would but for now, he was perfectly happy where he was. Which happened to be watching his rider brave the sands to finish delivering what they had been asked to retrieve.

Not knowing, how long Takura would be, (Some dragons were particularly chatty if not moody), the Ice slinked around, under the stands that were for the most part empty. There was no need for him to be out there if he wasn’t being useful in anyway, nor did he want to clutter the sands and get in anyone’s way. That would be far more embarrassing if he did so, and he could only hope his rider wouldn’t say or do anything recklessly that would cause him to have to rush out there to save him. He shuffled along, his long silver-white hair flowed behind him as he moved. He, himself wore cream covered simple clothes, but that didn’t hide the draconic scales or horns that pointed at him to being a dragon. Standing at a little of 8 feet, Takura felt more comfortable lurking like this than in his full form. But he couldn’t stop the little ice flurries that bounced around his feet--or well he could, but he rather liked to feel the ice than the sands underneath his feet, and they quickly dissipated after he moved his foot.

Mentally, he could hear the male grumbling as he tried to locate the nest where he needed to be, and he couldn’t help but roll his eyes. It seemed, much like the last hatching, this touching had been eventful. They had, of course heard of the events that had happened--an egg exploding among other things, and Takura sent his sympathies to those parents silently. He couldn’t imagine the pain and horror that had been--especially with eggs about to hatch any day now. He mused, wondering if he could convince Keth to attend. It was rare that they set through any of the hatchings, usually keeping tabs on it elsewhere, but perhaps it would be a change of pace if they sat in the stands and got a front view. They lived in Aessulla, so it shouldn’t be too hard to make some time off to stay home and watch it.

He shook his head, and in his meanderings he hadn’t quite noticed where he was going. It wasn’t often that the Ice bumped into anyone or lost track of where he was, but it did happen. He couldn’t be expected to be perfect--especially with how his rider was, but Takura didn’t like to be so careless or reckless. He was the calm to the storm--or at least. He tried to be. He couldn’t help it sometimes that Keth tried his patience, but then again, whose bonded didn’t? They had 23 years together or so and they didn’t stop the differences from sometimes rubbing the wrong way.

He bumped into someone, not full on, more like with his broad shoulders, brushing past someone, but enough to gather attention and unsettle one’s center of balance. He briefly stumbled, before regaining his balance, and then turned to look at whom he had run into. With a slight bow, he proffered a small smile.

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to bump into you like that”,While he was still in humanoid form, she towered far over him, but Takura had no worries that she would physically do anything. If she decided to start yelling at him, well, it wouldn’t be the first time someone had ranted at him--usually over Keth’s reckless behavior, and not his own. He didn’t recognize her either, but that didn’t mean much. There were thousands of dragons in the city--and the population had increased tenfold because of the hatching. He didn’t have many friends or those he would recognize by face, so he felt he should maybe introduce himself.

“I’m Takura, and again, I’m deeply sorry for disturbing you.” At the back of his mind, he could feel that his rider was struggling to get out of suddenly getting roped into helping with some other chores, and Takura hadn’t the mind to go rescue him. Some other work wouldn’t harm the rider, and he would be up here any minute anyways. But for now, he waited for her to respond.

Venria had sprawled out on the lower part of the sands after finishing her food, taking a moment to bask in the relative quiet. She had even decided to create a small, controlled snowfall above her body, as she sometimes did. It was entertaining to use her abilities that way, forcing herself to control every slight breeze and all the little snowflakes. So rarely was Venria allowed to actually create a full, magnificent storm, she had to satisfy herself with little things like this. She had to be even more careful in the hatching complex than in most places- there was always the chance that some mother dragon might throw a fit. Thankfully, most had chosen to stay away from the stands, so this area was relatively safe, and Venria was alone.

Or at least, she thought she was alone. She felt something brush against her scales, larger than a loose pet or dwarf dragon. Curiously, but with little urgency, the dragon moved her head to see exactly what the disturbance was. It appeared to be humanoid, but the height and the horns gave away the creature's true species immediately. Venria also took notice of the snow flurries around the creature's feet- a fellow ice dragon, she wondered? The snow could have been her own, perhaps, but it did look like they were coming from the other person. The horns didn't look characteristic of an air dragon, which usually possessed feathered crests, and air was the non-ice breed mostly likely to gather the snow in little flurries like that. He also didn't seem to be too affected by the cold scales he had bumped into.

"I'm Takura, and again, I’m deeply sorry for disturbing you,"

"Ah, Takura, is it? The pleasure is mine," Venria purred, perhaps in a way that was uncharacteristically kind. She flicked her tail in a friendly way, looking at Takura down her snout. "There's no need to worry, dear, you have not disturbed me. It's only polite to introduce myself, yes? My name is Venria. Tell me, dear, are you an ice dragon?"

Venria shifted, splaying her bladed tail out behind her so she was more comfortable. Suddenly, there was a commotion in a rather distant location on the sands, a mother dragon screaming and snapping at a hatching attendant. Such events had not seemed particularly uncommon, but it was always a bit jarring- and a bit annoying, when everyone realized what was going on. I hope I'm not such a demanding mother, the dragon thought to herself, taking a moment to witness what was going on. She had plans to fly next hatching season, and already, she was crafting her plans. The eggs would hatch upon the sands of Etharius, too- her home city.

"Are you busy, dear? Perhaps you'd like to stay up here a little longer..." Venria flicked her tail, gesturing to the enraged mother on the sands. "It does get so rough down there sometimes. The mothers and hatching attendants both mean well, but someone always ends up being fussy... Enough of that. How about you tell me about yourself, dear?" The tone of her voice was not rude or demanding, but it was clear that Venria was expecting Takura to agree to stay up in the stands.
