The Long Island Mean Machine ended the 1st half of the 2009 season in style Sunday night, with a 49-17 beat down in New York over the Omaha Xplosion. 4 different players rushed for a TD for Long Island, including rookie OS Jamil Johnson's first TD of his career and newly acquired RBLB Mike Lee's first as a member of the Mean Machine. Starting RBLB Grayson Norman added to his team lead in total TDs with his 12th of the season, and Long Island's all time rushing leader (yards and TDs) Pauly Dozer had two on the ground. The story on the night was QB Brice Pennington and his successful return to the field, where he went 9/15 125yds and a TD. The one TD, a 22-yard completion to starting WR Kelvin Street, made the QB-Receiver duo the current TD leaders in the franchise's history with 27 TD connections all-time as members of the Mean Machine, breaking a tie that Pennington also held with Mean Machine WRLB Deion Flanders (26 TDs), and only two better than Pennington's mark with WRDB Jim Kennedy (25 TDs). The next on the list would be former Mean Machine QB Mike Cranston and former Mean Machine WR Brad Goodalle with 24 TD completions for the duo, who both now play for Omaha. The Mean Machine capped off the night with 11 defensive plays recorded statistically including starting OLDL Bobcat's team leading 5th sack. Defensive Captain Butch Blast also added a PBU and a 14-yard interception, adding to his team leading 12 defensive plays on the season. Seems like everyone on the field for Long Island looked great at their role. Pennington came in and did exactly what the coaches wanted, and that was shaking the rust. Mike Lee debuted with a rushing TD in his backup role, as Jamil Johnson proved he can make some plays himself. Kelvin Street did what he does, as Bobcat, Butch Blast and the defense put on a clinic to show the rest of the league their guns. The backup kicker Moe MacDonald took a few kicks on the night to keep his leg in shape, and Pauly Dozer did a little bit of everything, with 2 rushing TDs, 2 PBUs and even an 18-yard reception. After the OIFL's All-Star break, Mean Machine heads out West for a rematch of last season's opening #1 seed vs. #8 crossover seed, as they head into Rocky Mountain to take on the Reign in a tough battle between two of the OIFL's toughest teams. DS Butch Blast, OS Kelvin Street and WRDB Jim Kennedy are possibles for the Eastern Conference All-Star team. Voting starts this week. |
