Feeders Can be given to Piranha's. Often the risk to Piranha's is exaggerated. However goldfish often contain growth-inhibiting hormones and are not clean fish. They contain diseases and parasites and every time you feed them to your Piranha's you are exposing them to a large risk. Gold Fish are the worst followed by Rosy Reds. If you are willing to keep them in a quarantine tank for a couple weeks you greatly reduce the chances of disaster with your fish. Beef Heart Beef Heart is a fantastic food to feed your piranhas. They will really love the taste and eat it aggressively and it provides a great deal of protein and nutrition for your Piranha's. You can buy the cubes at the pet store for $8.00 for a little tray of small cubes or you can buy it from a butcher for $.60/Lb. You will want to ask them to slice the meat down to 1/4in. You will take your meat bag home and cut the meat up more. You need to remove the outer lining and anything that doesn't look like yummy red meat needs to be trimmed. You will be able to tell when you are cutting up the heart. Once you get the meat-trimmed chop to about 1/8in cubes and freeze in a few plastic bags. You can then thaw what you need in a mug with warm water. I like to soak my Heart in warm water with a crushed garlic clove. Garlic aids in parasite removal. Shrimp Shrimp is a great food to feed your piranhas! Raw Shrimp should be fed to piranhas with nothing removed except the head. The shell should remain totally intact. Shrimp are a fantastic food to feed the piranha's especially to bring out the color. Don't buy the pre-cooked shrimp though. Flake Food and Pellets IF you can get the piranha's to take pellets and flake food it's a great addition to their diet. Some people will have luck with your Piranha's eating this and some won't. My piranha's especially like to eat Aquadine Flakes. Worms Another good food for Piranha's. I advise soaking them in wet paper towels for a couple of days before you feed them to the piranha's to ensure that they don't still have dirt inside of them. It will make a mess in your tank when the piranhas bite them in half. Smelt, Tilapia, catfish, halibut, Haddock, Trout All of these fish should provide the majority of your Piranha's diet. Always pick a white fillet for your Piranha's because the pink or red Fillets like Tuna and Salmon provide the fish with a greater amount of fat than what is healthy for them. Raw Chicken I would recommend staying away from chicken because the chicken you are going to find in super markets is pumped full of Anti-biotic and hormones. Chicken also has a bigger chance of poisoning than any other meat. That's why it's so critical before people eat poultry that it's very thoroughly cooked. Ask anyone that has ever recieved food poisoning from Chicken! There are plenty of other good foods to feed Piranha's without using Chicken. If you raised your own Chickens without Hormones and Anti-biotic and really wanted to feed them to Piranha's that might be ok but I don't have experience with this and won't recommend it. Pinkies, Fuzzies, Adult Mice and Rats It's becoming more and more common for rodents being fed to Piranha's. Some people prefer to feed them dead and frozen some people like to watch the Piranha's murder the mice. Rodents should make up a small portion of the diet of Piranha's. It's understandable for a treat you want to give the Piranha's live rodents however this creates poor water conditions. Feed sparingly if you can feed pinkies it can be a tad bit less messy because the Piranha's can often eat them in a bite or two. Is it ok to feed my piranha? Cheese, brats, pizza, ice cream, broccoli, chips, beer, bacon, hotdogs, roast beef, bbq ribs, etc Try to put yourself in the shoes of your fish. In the natural environment fish don't eat any processed foods. So don’t feed them processed foods. I know it might seem funny at first to see if they are willing to eat foods in the human diet but be realistic and responsible about their feedings. Provide your fish with a proper diet and they will be happy and healthy. WHen piranhas are about the size of a dime till the time they start to get about 3in long they should be offered feedings 3 times a day. Feed the Piranha's as long as they have an eager interest in what you are offering them. Offer a varied diet of the options that i listed above. Once the fish grows to about 3in You will start to notice that the fishes eagerness will decrease on the third feeding and you can cut back to 2 feedings per day. As more time goes on you will decrease your feedings to 1 per day and then eventually every other day. The amount of food they eat each feeding will increase all the way up till the point that they are eating every other day. Then they will eat alot. |
