TO 'ELL WIZ ZE VILLANELLE If language fails you when passions are stirred And subtle descriptive terms can't be found Just trust the French to provide the right word. With only three lines and two rhymes incurred, Where are the nuances to be found If language fails you when passions are stirred? On Boef Bourguignon, accolades are conferred . It's only stew with a gourmet sound. Just trust the French to provide the right word. The word "love" is short and can hardly be heard, But "amour" has an ambience far more profound If language fails you when passions are stirred. Now I've reached an impasse. I should have deferred My ingénue efforts to break new ground. Just trust the French to provide the right word. There's no real dénouement, I've simply inferred That a Villanelle poem should not be hidebound. If language fails you when passions are stirred Just trust the French to provide the right word.
