Topic came up last night... Which sports franchise is CURRENTLY the best??? I will limit it to the four major professional sports (or Tiger Woods would be the answer)... for you NASCAR fans, that means baseball, football, basketball and hockey... Tradition and history should count for something, but definitely not everything... Consider how the franchises conduct themselves, and how well use the resources they have... put another way: Which sports franchise would you be most proud to own right now? My opinion (first thoughts): In baseball, my contenders are the Braves (ugh) and Twins, with the Yanks, A's and Cardinals just behind. In football, I think the candidates are the Patriots (UGH!) and Steelers, with the Panthers and Colts just behind. In basketball and hockey... hmmm I only know enough to say it isn't my Knicks and Rangers (hockey). Any thoughts? PLEASE PICK YOUR ONE FRANCHISE. I am horrifed... but I might have to say the Patriots (my mind is screaming at my hands, "DELETE, DELETE." |

Baseball: I have to go with the Yankees just for the fact they are in it to win it every year. Cards & Braves get an honorable mention. Football: Patriots hands down. Though I am proud to be a Giants fan because the ownership is really good. Probably too loyal to their employees which is their downfall. Basketball: I'd go with the Spurs, though not my area of expertise. Hockey: Also not my area of expertise, but I'd go with the Devils and Detroit. |

And if forced to pick only one franchise? Re the Yankees... I think the fact that there is so much castoff Yankee talent in the league is the main reason I don't put them #1... plus the way Steinbrenner treats his employees (not at all something to be proud of). On the plus side, they did create the huge revenue disparity (starting their own channel, etc), taking advantage of their advantages:)... and they do really good things in terms of development/scouting in the Carribean and Asia. |

Baseball - Braves Football - Steelers Basketball - Boston Hockey - Montreal Side note- ODS, I see you put the Colts in your list. Is that Pre or Post sneaking out of Baltimore in the middle of the night on a cold snowy March night, after the owner swore he would never move the team? Yes I am still bitter and will never wish any success on the franchise until the Irsay clan dies a horrible painful death! |

This ought to be interesting...seein' as how I'm a girl, and know just enough about sports to barely participate in conversations. But, I'll humor ya. Baseball: gotta say the Indians or the Cubs, wait...no, I really dislike Sosa...and the NL, so the Indians take it. Sure they're terrible. That's what we fans like about them. Terrible, with glimmers of hope. They made hilarious movies about it. A franchise that has a killer season every 10 years or so, is perfect. Who wants to win all the time, like the Yankees? Hate those guys. Football: Cowboys. T.O. is a pain, yes, BUT....every team has to have "that guy." The Steelers are okay as a franchise, but I was bred to hate them...sure, I resent the Browns for 30+ years of being a royal disappointment in my life, but that doesn't make me like the Steelers. Ever. Any team that's changed cities* or come from "expansion" blows. *The Browns don't count, although Grrrr Ravens. Hey! Maybe the Bears. Yep...can't forget the Bears. Basketball: Duh. Harlem Globetrotters?! (Or maybe the Celtics, if you're gonna be a stickler about the NBA issue) Hockeyball: Love, Love, Love the Devils. Love them. Also, I like the Leaf's (That's how they say it, not Leaves). Toronto is usually a great team with low drama, plus they're Canadian-based. Redwings, Penguins, Blackhawks, Fliers...all pretty good. (When the heck did Phoenix get a team? Do they even HAVE ice there?) You can't elect a team from a city that never freezes as a hockey "franchise." So...taking all that into consideration...the ONE Franchise that is just...perfect: great fans, excellent tradition, solid performance, and is actually the embodiment of what sports should be about...Da Bears. Bill Swerski: Now, gentlemen, let me ask you this: What if Da Bears were all 14 inches tall, you know, about so high? Now, what's your score of today's game? Carl Wollarski: Against Da Giants? Bill Swerski: Yes, give 'em a handicap. Carl Wollarski: Bears 18, Giants 10. And that would finally be a good game. Pat Arnold: Yeah, it would be a good game. Mini Bears 24, Giants 14. Todd O'Conner: What about Ditka? Would he be mini, too? Bill Swerski: No, he would be full-grown. Todd O'Conner: Oh, then, uh.. Mini Bears 31, Giants 7. Carl Wollarski: Oh, hold on. Then I change mine, too. I thought it was Mini Ditka. Bill Swerski: Okay, gentlemen, another scenario: Da Bears, they don't make it, the plane is delayed.. and the only one who shows up is Ditka. Ditka vs. Da Giants. Okay, score, gentlemen. Pat Arnold: Alright, after da heart attack, I gotta say Ditka 17, Giants 14. He just barely gets by. Bob Swerski: Now what if Da Bears were to enter the Indianapolis 500? Uhhh, what would you predict would be the outcome, huh? Todd O'Conner: How would they compete? Bob Swerski: Well, let's say they rode together in a big bus. Carl Wollarski: Is Ditka driving? Bob Swerski: Of course. Carl Wollarski: Then I like Da Bears! Bob Swerski: Sure. |

About the Colts... yes, that wasn't a bright moment in the NFL... it did however, occur much further in the past than the Browns being moved to Baltimore and becoming the Ravens . Seriously though, the basis for putting them in there... I like Dungy and Polian - lots of respect for them. I also have no issues with the character/role model suitability of any of their main players. They let Edge go... at the right time, and drafted his replacement. It is a well run organization, of which I would be a proud owner, and even fan. I put much more emphasis in the past ten years, than in overall franchise history. In terms of hockey - I haven't seen anything in any way from the Canadiens in ages... and as much as it pains me, I guess I have to say the Devils (when will a team I like be worthy of respect, and the teams I dislike not be worthy of amention in these terms... ugggg). |

On the plus side, they did create the huge revenue disparity (starting their own channel, etc), taking advantage of their advantages:)... and they do really good things in terms of development/scouting in the Carribean and Asia.
If I had to pick one it would be a toss up between the Patriots and the Yanks. I think the Pats have done a phenominal job since Parcells took over in the mid-90's. Not that he deserves most of the credit, but he did get the ball rolling and the people who have taken over since then have taken it even higher. They are always in the running. They have 3 rings in a 4 year period. They have the biggest clutch player in the game today. And they find a way to replace everyone without having any superstars. Similiar to the Yankees reign from 96-01. On the Yankees, I think they have failed in keeping good young talent over the last 6 years plus. An issue they have worked on this past off-season to focus more on getting younger and building from within. What they do is spend their money for what their goal is, which is to win. Steinbrenner has been brilliant in setting up the YES network and buying players like Matsui to market his network in that country. He has made a crap load of money and he throws much of it right back into his team to help them win. His passion for winning has blinded him on bad decisions, but his heart has always been in the right place. Letting Cashman really run the team now is the best move he could've made. And he is very loyal to his players. He has helped players like Strawberry and Gooden out when most think they did not deserve a 2'nd, 3'rd....18'th chance. Sure, he has made some enemies, but who has not in that position. So, my answer is going to be one based on logic but with some heart as well...The Yankees. |

I believe the question here was which team would you be most proud to own based on it's tradition, history, etc. Without a doubt, question or any other team even coming close.......the New York Yankees are the greatest professional sports team ever assembled. No team has ever been a more consistent, won more championships, had the greatest players of their sport on their team and are valued higher than any other team (I believe they have surpassed the billion dollar mark now). If people are choosing the teams they like best, you get a totally different response. I would say that you should ask the question and exclude the Yankees. At keast you will get some discussion of sense. It's just that no team has ever come close to the success of the Yankees (and team has more fans of hate either). Sport by sport, excluding the Yankees..... Baseball........Boston (mainly cause of the Yankees) Football.........Green Bay (they made football a household word) Hockey..........NY Ranger (my sail will never go limp after 1994) Basketball......Boston (just for their success & the Lakers moved too much...or it would be them) I don't know why people don't respond to the question and just go off on a tangent. Which reminds me that the Hoover Dam was not named after the vacuum cleaner. |

that is why you don't see one team I like in my picks. Even though to me they have great histories (some shorter than others), they have their organizational flaws etc.. So I went with the ones that I indeed would not be ashamed to own. |

No doubt about the yankees. they are too consistent and no team has as much respect, money or championships as they do. But I guess we have to go into the second tier teams Baseball- Brooklyn/LA Dodgers. So much history and respect even after the move Football- Pittsburgh Steelers. Tradition!!! Hockey- *Sigh* the devils. Basketball- Lakers |

Agreed. The Yankees are, to put it in terms to which we all might relate, Pocket Aces. The discussion of other teams is valuable, for the various reasons given, etc. I'd love to own the Bears. Really. So, my answer stays. Is this about which team is going to bring you the most cash, or the most personal satisfaction? Or are those the same thing for some people? |

If that is the question then the answer hands down is my beloved Cowboys! Of course I would also like to own DEI or RCR. |

YOU PICK THE DEVILS???? BOY, do I h ave someone to show this post to....Devils...hahahaha The Devils, although a good team, do not have tradition. An example would be..... Since the advent of the NHL, the NY Rangers have a tradition of coming close, but just not winning (until the Messiah Delivered....oh yes, what a moment in life). Montreal, Detroit, Boston....tradition in winning and having classy clubs. In football, there is a lot of tradition amongst certain teams. Green Bay (as I mentioned) is probably the classic old time NFL team. But I might have to go with the Cowboys (even though I hate them). Enough sports.....now let's talk money. Making money with a team? Of course Yankees. Georgey bough them for pennies....besides them...I think LA does quite well. I did not pick the Brooklyn Dodgers because they took team out of me. |
