This is hard to explain......let me try....lol 1st hour of tourneys...I always have a goal to obtain at least 5 times what I started with. Usually I can obtain this quite easily. The 2nd hour of the tourney..I find myself tightening up real bad.....hoping I can slide my way into the final table. I've tried to correct this but nothing seems to be working. I can get into the top 20 of an mtt standing on my head usually..but I have a lot of issues increasing my chip stack in the 2nd hour. Any ideas on how to fix this? |

I would help you here but I only get 4 times my starting stack in the first hour and always get knocked out 21st. I would suggest you ask OG for help....I heard she is one of the top 3 players on ESPN and I know she can help you...maybe even coach you along to rectify any moves you might be doing wrong. |

LOL, stock. Hilarious as usual. Far from the top 3, far from the top 3 posters in this thread, even. Nads, I have no help for you. I play tourneys almost completely backwards from the way you describe. I often get squeezed down to 1/5th my starting stack in the first hour, and then proceed to build from there, and THEN finish wherever the bubble is. It sucks, too. I do not recommend it. |

Hi Nads, My suggestion would be to not focus so much on how many chips your looking to accumulate in a specific time period, but look at your stack in relation to the blinds as you progress in tournaments. Dan Harrington refers to it with his M calculations, and I will often sit with a calculator as the tournament proceeds to adjust my play accordingly. If I have more than 20 times the big blind, I'm free to use all my poker tools. Once I reach the 10 - 15 blinds area, I tighten up, and look for the ideal spots to get my chips in. At 5 times the big blind, if play gets to me and nobody else is in the pot, I'm all in. I'd highly recommend reading Harrington on Holdem 1, 2 and 3. Book 2 is a goldmine. |

Why you do well in the first hour: There is a lot of dead free money available. You are taking sweets from toddlers. Why only 5x? Why you tighten up: the excitement of a free MTT? Suggest you pretend it is an STT and play how you play with them, only looser. Swing your big stack like a big, er, club and squish the teeny tinies. Do not stand on your head all the way to the top 20 - the extra blood will make you squiffy. The lack of oxygen to your brain could be a cause of your flacid stack. Do mild exercises like kegels instead. Set a higher goal - e.g. make your goal to end up with (the number of players in the tournament) * {what you started with}. It could be your vision (great for a 5 person tournie) is too limited for an MTT. |
