I posted this as well on the "other" board, but figure it will just get lost in the daily shuffle of who is joining what team, so.... Next week, going down to the Argosy Casino by Cincinnati to spend a couple days away with the wifey. During those days, I plan on playing in my first "LIVE" tourney. Was kinda wondering what to watch for... how not to look like an idiot (i.e. unlike a typical Sunday Qualifier). Should I slow play like a puppcake every hand until I get assaulted? Should I request blueberries at the table for brain food? Should I celebrate like that Khan guy when I win my first hand? What to do.... what to do.... Should I stick to video poker on the slot machines??? Should I stay home so I don't miss Tuesday League night??? Should I ask the floor guy where I get to reload my chips after midnite?? So many questions... mrcomfy |

Relax, have fun. Play in a tourney you can afford not to cash in and dont worry about it. Everyone plays their first tourney live at some point, so everyone has been there. Dont be afraid to ask questions of the dealer if you arent sure of something. Besides, you have game so the fact that you will look like a fish should work to your advantage. |

Best advice that I could give you is to do the following: 1. Pay attention to others play as much as possible. Identify playing style of others at table. 2. Refresh yourself on common tells. 3. Practice breathing to calm heart rate. You will prolly have a big spike when you actually get in your first hand and flop the nuts. 4. Be patient. 5. An most important, enjoy yourself because this will be the first of many. Nothing Like the first tourney for a great learning experience. |

I will add one thing, maybe some have heard this from me as well........ Play the players, not the cards. Milo is giving excellent advice and staying within dollar amounts that won't hurt you at all (as Jake mentioned) should make it very enjoyable. Should you get that "bad beat" or misread......let your self explode...to yourself....then remember, the HANDS OVER....next. Just use it as lesson to understand the players. When you win that first hand....ask the dealer to give you his autograph on a napkin (I am assuming you will have an alcoholic beverage sitting in front of you). Being all weird will make others think you're an easy target....well ok, so oyu are, but you can use it to your advantage. Really just enjoy yourself..........afterall, this is for your entertainment like going to the movies or a professional wrestling match.

here are a couple of things that I found worked to my advantage the first live tourney I played. Hand the man your money and kiss it goodbye. Do not dwell on the "buy in you just spent" when you get delt 72 off 10 times in a row. It is not ESPN it really is Random and Can happen so forget about the cash it will calm you down. Milo and Jakes are good points. Relax, relax, relax. Patients, patients, patients. Bad beats can a will happen live as well, move on to the next hand. Do not dwell on the hand that just played out or 5 hands ago. you didn't do what you are thinking you should have done. Oh well move on, next set of crappy pocket cards please dealer. I found my hands shake when playing Live in a casino ( not during live home games though). But they shake "all the time" so it doesn't provided a tell about me. I discovered that I was doing it and it was all the time so I didn't worry about it. You should see the looks you get when your hands shake when making a bet, and then shake when you fold, pure confusion. Do not pick the cards up, and do not remove them from the felt / playing surface. The dealer will warn you if you do it. The dealers are your friend you are not playing against them ask them questions they would rather teach someone then waste time with inexperience. I found that if I smiled everytime I looked at my pockets it removed a possible tell. Smile when you get rockets (your mine), smile when you get 72 off (sarcastic smile like great just my luck). Over all HAVE FUN. It was a blast and I can't wait to do it again. Side note. When I was in Vegas there was a Table Game called Texas Hold'em Double Up. That was a good game and I was able to win more money playing that then at the cash tables. You play against the dealer not everyone else. Careful playing with a full table though as the outs get diluted. |

Rise 1 exactly one hour before dawn. Go to your rabbit snare, being sure not to have your path crossed by a black cat. Or is it the other way around? On your return open the door to your house. Let the robin fly in. Sneeze 3 times. Sit down for breakfast. After breakfast cut off one of the rabbit's feet and pop it into your pocket. Keep it with you all day. Pick up a pin and drop a glove. Spend some time in the yard counting clover leaves. If you can't find one with four use glue and scissors. Pop that in there with the now slightly iffy foot. Find an acorn. You guessed it - that needs to stay with you too. Go to a street - these are things you will need to find: a penny, a horse shoe, a piece of coal, and a ladybird (bug to you people). DON'T TREAD ON THE CRACKS! While you're in town you might want to get some kind of hand bag to keep all this stuff in. As long as it's small you can use a lucky object as a card protector. Eat fish. DON'T smell dandelions. Put the goldfish in the pond NOT in the house. Put something irritant on your palms. Avoid all situations where you might come into sharp contact with a reflective object. Find a bag for that damned foot - maybe also some Febreze. Relieve that lucky itch. DON'T walk under that ladder. When you get dressed put your clothes on inside out. When you get to the casino spit on the cards. If they won't let you do this show them the decaying foot and cackle. Note whether people in this establishment tend to avoid confrontations with the strangely dressed odd smelling people with bleeding hands and weirdly bulky hand bags. Use this information to your advantage - but most of all.... Good luck! |

What the hell do you mean by "You People". That some kind of nationality slur? I think we got a Limey in our midst. Sir Bedevere: There are ways of telling whether she is a witch. Peasant 1: Are there? Oh well, tell us. Sir Bedevere: Tell me. What do you do with witches? Peasant 1: Burn them. Sir Bedevere: And what do you burn, apart from witches? Peasant 1: More witches. Peasant 2: Wood. Sir Bedevere: Good. Now, why do witches burn? Peasant 3: ...because they're made of... wood? Sir Bedevere: Good. So how do you tell whether she is made of wood? Peasant 1: Build a bridge out of her. Sir Bedevere: But can you not also build bridges out of stone? Peasant 1: Oh yeah. Sir Bedevere: Does wood sink in water? Peasant 1: No, no, it floats!... It floats! Throw her into the pond! Sir Bedevere: No, no. What else floats in water? Peasant 1: Bread. Peasant 2: Apples. Peasant 3: Very small rocks. Peasant 1: Cider. Peasant 2: Gravy. Peasant 3: Cherries. Peasant 1: Mud. Peasant 2: Churches. Peasant 3: Lead! Lead! King Arthur: A Duck. Sir Bedevere: ...Exactly. So, logically... Peasant 1: If she weighed the same as a duck... she's made of wood. Sir Bedevere: And therefore... Peasant 2: ...A witch! |

Well these are from my lessons learned file from when I started playing live last year: 1. You do not have to make a decision in 15 seconds!! You will of course muck most hands, but when it comes time for you to make a decision (bet-raise-call-reraise) count to eight before you act (It is preferable if you count in your head and not out loud). How fast you react to decision is a pretty good tell at the table. 2. Dependent upon the blind structure and how "fast" a tournament it is will dictate when you will need to start making moves. I always play ultra-tight the first and second levels (30 minute levels) to try and get a read on my opponents. It gives you the time necessary to decide whom you are going to pick on, and whom you want to stay away from. 3. Pay attention to your "M". If it is fast blind structure and your M gets to about 15 you really need to start making moves because in those fast tournies the blinds will start doubling up rather quickly. Most play will be pre-flop. (Most closely resembles the third hour of league play or the third hour of a DBP) 4. Slide your chips into the pot, don't splash the pot as you see on TV. It just makes a mess and is very annoying to the other players and the dealer. 5. As silly as this sounds remember that cards have the numbers and letters in the left corner when you are looking at them (It took me forever to figure this out and was always twisting/turning the cards so I could see my hole cards...looked like a fish). As mentioned earlier remember to protect your cards so that your opponents can not see. The tables will probably have 10 people so you are squished together. 6. Have fun!!! It really is much more fun to play live than online. RARNOLDTX |

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of goverment. On the other hand is it better or worse than a bunch of freezing Iowans gathering in a nearby school to remonstrate with each other? |

OK, the best I can offer you is this. I will give you OG's and BG's personal "private" phone number. In the event you reach a point where you are confused or just not feeling exactly right........just call either one or call them both. True, this may have zero effect on your poker tourney, but at that point....who really cares abit (<---- done for the Scoob man) poker when you have them both on the line. Oh...and have fun playing cards as well. |

Hi here are some tips on occassion I supervise poker tournaments 1. Get there a little early when registering ask for the tournamnt rules they should supply them to you read them important. 2.Take your seat early as well then you can ask dealer questions if you don't understand any of the rules. 3. Be aware look at the poker layout if there is a betting line ask the dealer if that is what they are using if no betting line your cards must always remain in front of your chip stacks or chips can be considered as an all in bet. If they have a betting line they are using you must cut down your chips behind it anything you take across it without a verbal statement is in action or consider a bet. 4. Always remember verbal statements are binding be clear with your intentions check, call, raise. ex of what not to say, "I will call your bet and raise" you are locked into just a call because that is what you said first. 5. Never show your hand if it is not called. It gives up to much information. 6. Never muck your cards at the showdown until you are absolutely sure that they are not the winning hand. If in doubt expose them let the dealer read them you may just have the winning hand after all. 7. protect your hand from being mucked put chip or something on top of cards and don't push cards forward if your intention is not to muck them without first securing them. Good luck and have fun |

Remember most of the people in the tourny are there wanting to play everyhand. Use that to your advantage especially in the early stages. They will chase and chase hard. WATCH THE BOARD AND READ THE FREAKIN BOARD carefully. I love the 8 count rule. One guy who asked me to help him with his live game has become a serious threat since he started using it. It removes a fast play tell and makes you look like a thinker. Even though the blinds rise on the same basis remember you are looking at fewer hands per level since the rate of play is waaaaaaay slower live than online. Infact find out who the internet players are and watch them. They tend to get bored after a while. A bored player is a target of oppourtunity. Above all relax, have fun, its just a card game. |

So far you keep hearing what should be natural for you.....be COMFortable. I for one (and trust me, this is quite rare), would like to hear all about your time there. No, not the stupid card playing...I want to hear about Mr's Comfy Please try to remember how you felt during the game and what you were thinking. I find that the best part of it. Who knows, maybe if I keep hearing about this stuff I'll actually play in a live game one day. |

Well, I do appreciate the insight from you folks. I played last year down there in my first cash game. It was $1/$3 NL table. I came out ahead the first night I got there. That was of course to the rigged hands I got at the end. I was dealt AA in back to back hands.... got all my cash in the middle preflop and they held up somehow. Beats me... Anyways... I'm still in negotiations with AJ regarding sending announcers to the site to record this initial tourney plunge. I think we will get a deal done. Best thing I learned during my first LIVE play was that... JJ still sux... A wee bit closer to being a REAL poker player mrcomfy |
