I have a chocolate lab named Bear. He is a great dog and I have no complaints except one. Whenever there is a thunderstorm or fireworks nearby, my dog goes in to panic mode. He shakes like a leaf and I am unable to calm him down. Eventually he will seek solace by climbing in to the tub in my bathroom. I do not know why he does this. He must have watched the weather channel and heard of folks surviving tornadoes by hunkering down in their own tubs. I really do not mind him doing it. Its no big deal to clean his hairs out of the tub but it becomes a real inconvenience when I have to use the bathroom. He will climb out of the tub if I go in but refuses to leave the bathroom. It is the only time he does not do what I command. Today we had some vicious thunderstorms and he of course sought shelter in my tub. I was busy playing poker but this mornings two coffees and breakfast required a bathroom visit by mid afternoon. Now because I have such a hard time pulling myself away from free poker, I only left myself enough time to get to my upstairs bathroom which is close to where my computer is located. I tried to drag him out but he refused to budge so I was left to do my business with the dog panting heavily right in front on me. I feel really uncomfortable having anyone, human or animal, with me while I punish the toilet. I kept having thoughts of a blumpkin which really made me uncomfortable. I am ready to call the dog whisperer for advice but I figured I would try here first. Does anyone know how you can calm a dog down who is afraid of thunderstorms and loud bangs, like fireworks. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks, tommck1129 P.S. - The dog left the bathroom when I was finished. Apparently, some things are worse than scary noises.

well, I can't help you here as my dog is afraid of the same things, ie. anything loud. We have to make sure we let her out to do her buisness before any T-storms hit or fireworks are going to be set off or she will pee everytime there is a bang. She will "stick" to your leg and pant like there is no tomorrow when she knows there is a storm comming. Then finally she hides under something and will emerge when ready. Just deal with it and know your not alone. You could always build another bathroom or put a tub in another room for him so you can do your buisness in peace. Just thank goodness its a dog, my kid has learned to pick the lock and wants to discuss the infield fly rule while I am having "reading time". LOL |
