Skeletal remains found in a jungle region near Nicaragua are not believed to be those of the Rev. James Carney, an American Jesuit who disappeared in 1983 while accompanying a guerrilla group. The Rev. Joseph Mulligan, a fellow Jesuit who has been pressing authorities to find Father Carney's remains, said an examination of dental and other records did not match a skeleton found earlier this year in the Patuca jungle. Father Mulligan said investigators planned to return to the jungle region, where other skeletons remain. David Gonzalez (NYT)

World Briefing | Americas: Honduras: Remains May Be American Priest's

By DAVID GONZALEZ (NYT)
Published: January 30, 2003
Officials may have found the remains of the Rev. James Carney, an American Jesuit who disappeared in 1983 while accompanying a small leftist rebel group on a doomed invasion. Investigators sent by a local prosecutor found the skeletal remains of about 10 people in a dense jungle near the Nicaraguan border. Some had bullet holes in the skull. Father Carney, who had been expelled from Honduras after an 18-year career ministering to the poor, was chaplain to 100 rebels who were captured and executed by Honduran soldiers soon after slipping into the country. Officials said it would take months to finish tests for a positive identification. David Gonzalez (NYT)
