The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in locating a 20-year-old woman who has been missing for more than a month.

Sandra S. Purgiel, who celebrated her 20th birthday on June 3, was reported missing last week by her mother, Jeanne Criswell, who lives in Gibsonton, Fla.

Criswell said Friday that her daughter came to Sumter with a friend from New Hampshire to work and go to college, but her friend left and returned north without her.

“We thought we would hear from her on her birthday, you know to say ‘Hey Mom, it’s my birthday,’ but she didn’t,” the mother said.

Missing: Sandra S. Purgiel

Age: 20

Last seen: About 8 a.m. on May 15 in the S.C. 441 area

Description: 5 feet 4 inches tall, 225 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a McDonald’s uniform.

Authorities and Purgiel’s family ask anyone with any information about her whereabouts to contact her mother at (813) 728-2272 or at bubbacriswell@yahoo.com; the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 436-2700; or Crimestoppers at (803) 436-2718 or 1-888-237-STOP.

Criswell said Purgiel and her friend had been staying with her friend’s grandmother in Dalzell, but she left the Peach Orchard Road home and hasn’t been heard from since.
Her daughter, she said, didn’t attend her classes and didn’t show up for work, which is out of character for her.
“She’s never missed any work. She’s been working since she was 14 years old,” Criswell said. “She just doesn’t do something like that.”
Criswell described her daughter as “very outgoing.”
“She’ll follow anybody,” she said. “She doesn’t judge people.”
Sumter County Sheriff’s Maj. Larry Florence said investigators have not been able to generate any solid leads on the case since the missing-persons report was filed last week.
“Her stepfather and I are worried to death about her,” Criswell said. “Please make a note in there that her mother said she loves her.”
