Body found in tree
White man's remains were in Orange Grove
By ROBIN FITZGERALD

GULFPORT - Authorities Wednesday afternoon were trying to identify a body found in a tree near an intersection in the Orange Grove area.

The body appears to be that of a white man who may have had black hair, according to Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove.

The body was found at 9:55 a.m. Wednesday as utility workers were installing fiber optic lines on Three Rivers Road just south of O'Neal Road.

"We have no explanation at this point as to how he ended up in the tree," Hargrove said. "It appears he had been there some time."

Hargrove said he has asked Dr. Paul McGarry, a forensic pathologist, to join the investigation.

"How long he had been there, we're not even going to speculate until Dr. McGarry looks into it."

Authorities blocked roads leading to the four-way stop while crews from Mississippi Power Co., the Gulfport Fire Department and the Gulfport Police Department helped remove the body.

"We're asking that anyone with a missing loved one who hasn't reported them missing to call Gulfport police," Hargrove said.

To contact police investigators, call 868-5920 or 868-5980.

BODY IN TREE STILL A MYSTERY TO POLICE
ROBIN FITZGERALD, rfitzgerald@sunherald.com

GULFPORT --- Authorities thought they had identified the body of a man found in a tree, but the man they thought it might be turns out to be alive and under a doctor's care at a Jackson hospital.

The identity of the man found Aug. 2 in Gulfport's Orange Grove area remains a mystery, but forensic officials said they aren't giving up hope that even the smallest piece of information will help determine who he was.

Utility workers installing fiber optic lines found the body off Three Rivers Road just south of O'Neal Road.

"We don't have a whole lot to go on right now," said Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove.

All authorities know is that the man died of blunt-force injuries and had been in the tree about two weeks. That would have put him missing since at least mid-July.

Hargrove said the man was white, 5-feet-6 and weighed about 150 pounds. He had black hair, long on top, but about three-fourths of an inch long on the sides. He was wearing bluejeans and white socks but no shirt.

How he got in the tree isn't known.
