County Officials Need Help Identifying Two Remaining Katrina Victims

Aug 18, 2006 05:47 PM CDT

Only two Katrina victims remain unidentified in Harrison County, and coroner Gary Hargrove is hoping you can change that. On Friday, he released detailed descriptions of the two men hoping someone will recognize them.

One is a black man with black hair found in Biloxi. He was 25 to 35 years old with a scar near his right hip and a tattoo on his left forearm that says "Love Jones."

He was 5' 9" and weighed 200 pounds. He had prominent canine or cuspid teeth with no fillings. He was wearing blue denim pants (size 32/34 from Old Navy) and a hooded sweatshirt (size XL from Old Navy).

The other victim is a white man found in west Harrison County. He was 60 to 70 years old, with two fingers partially missing on his left hand. The middle left finger was amputated and his left ring finger was amputated at the tip.

He was 5' 9" and weighed 250 pounds. His gray hair was receding and he had no teeth. He was wearing Sand N Sun swim trunks (size large) which are sold widely at Wal-Mart. The trunks were blue with gold trim at top and a stripe down the leg.

The man had osteoarthritis of the spine, emphysema and coronary heart disease, so he was likely a smoker.

"We're hoping that this information we're coming out with now, that will be put on ya'lls website, will help identify these two gentlemen, so we can get 'em back to their families," Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said.

"On August 29, at some point during the day, we'll have a graveside service for both of them in the City of Gulfport at Evergreen Cemetery."

If you can help identify these two men please call the coroner's office at (228) 865-4290 or the Harrison County Emergency Operations Center at (228) 865-4002.

Katrina victim "Strength" identified as a Gulfport man

By WLOX Staff

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - We now know the names of every person killed by Hurricane Katrina in Harrison County. Thursday morning, Coroner Gary Hargrove announced the identity of "Strength" - the last unidentified storm victim.

Frank Jones of Gulfport was just 20-years-old when he died. His body was found two days after Katrina's landfall in a canal behind Garden Park Medical Center.

Hargrove says Jones' name was added to the missing list, but he wasn't readily identified because the tattoo description given to authorities did not match what was on the victim's body.

Jones' body was laid to rest next to another unidentified victim. The two were named "Will" and "Strength."

In 2007, DNA tests helped to identify "Will" as 78-year-old James L. Blair of Pass Christian. His family decided to leave his body buried at Evergreen Cemetery.

Jones' family will have to decide if they will do the same, or move his body to another burial site. Regardless, a foot marker will be added to the Evergreen Cemetery burial site to identify "Strength" as Jones.

Hargrove told WLOX News that 97 people died during the storm in Harrison County. Brad Kessie will have more with Gary Hargrove later today on WLOX News.
