Search Resumes for Missing Woman; Family Waits Investigators consider Sherry Wolfgang's disappearance is suspicious. Her family is afraid she may be dead. Wednesday, January 10, 5:26 p.m. By Bob Reynolds The family of a woman from Northumberland County who has been missing for five days fears she is dead. Wednesday a prosecutor said foul play has not been ruled out in the case. "We just want our sister back so we can do the right thing," Deb Hardy said of her sister, Sherry Wolfgang before bursting into tears. "We're going to find her. We're going to find her. It's going to be okay." Wolfgang, of Mount Carmel, has been missing since last week. Her husband, Steven, was arrested Tuesday after admitting torching his wife's sport utility vehicle in nearby Schuylkill County. "I didn't do it. I didn't do anything to Sherry," Wolfgang said when he was arrested. "Foul play is suspected but until the Pennsylvania State Police complete their investigation I don't want to comment any further on that," Schuylkill County District Attorney Jim Goodman. State police resumed their search for Sherry Wolfgang. A helicopter could be seen flying over Mahanoy Creek Wednesday. The pilot was directing troopers on the ground. There were a few false sightings. "In my heart I don't want to believe it but in my heart I think she's dead, in my heart, because it's been too long," said Barb Weikel, Sherry's other sister. "I just want to help put the family at peace, closure, and find the body. It means a lot to me. I want to do a lot. I feel it's right," said Wolfgang's brother-in-law Bob Hardy. Wolfgang's house remains cordoned off so no one can come or go. Flowers and candles are still outside the house from a vigil for Sherry Wolfgang. Wolfgang's family is hoping for the best. A candle sits in their window. They will turn it out only when Sherry is found and brought home. "We may have not been a close-knit family but she's blood. She's our sister and we love her and we want her back, one way or another," Weikel added. Lenny Shuder has known Sherry Wolfgang since she was a child. "Everybody wants to know what's the matter. That's all I know. I know her a long time. I know the whole family," he said. His feelings are shared by others who want to know what happened to their missing neighbor. "We're staying hopeful and I hope they find her one way or another so they can be at peace," said Stacy Vincenzes. http://www.wnep.com/Global/story.asp?S=5921512 |

By Marcia Moore The Daily Item January 26, 2007 TREMONT — After pleading innocent to arson charges Thursday, Steven D. Wolfgang had nothing else to say as the sisters of his missing wife yelled at him to reveal where he dumped her remains. "Tell us where Sherry is," chanted Debra Hardy and Barbara Weikel, sisters of Sherry Wolfgang, 42, of Mount Carmel, who has been missing for three weeks and is presumed dead. As Mr. Wolfgang was escorted out of District Judge Carol Pankake's Tremont office, Ms. Hardy and Ms. Weikel, along with Mrs. Wolfgang's friends, Emma Ahrensfield and Agie Mowery, held placards with the words, "Murderer" and "Sherry didn't deserve to die." "I want him to hear this and tell us where she is. She needs to be at rest," Ms. Hardy said. His eyes cast downward, Mr. Wolfgang mumbled, "No comment" as the women pleaded with him to divulge where he left his wife's body. Ms. Hardy said she believes Mr. Wolfgang killed her sister, but doubts his claim that he dumped her body in Mahanoy Creek. "He's playing a cat and mouse game," Ms. Weikel said. Mr. Wolfgang, 46, allegedly confessed to authorities that he beat his wife to death in their 207 S. Market St. home on the evening of Jan. 5, stuffed her body in a metal box and threw it in a waterway in Eldred Township. Mrs. Wolfgang's disappearance came to light on Jan. 8 when Schuylkill County firefighters were called to a parking area off Route 4022 in Eldred Township to put out a vehicle fire. At the scene, Mr. Wolfgang emerged from nearby woods with burns on his hands and admitted setting the fire, state police said. While an emergency medical technician tended to his injuries, Mr. Wolfgang confessed to killing his wife, according to court documents. State police said he repeated the confession to them later that day. There has been no sign of Mrs. Wolfgang since Jan. 5, despite several days of searching along the nearby Mahanoy Creek where Mr. Wolfgang said he threw the metal box containing her body. No homicide charges have been filed in the case, but Mr. Wolfgang remains behind bars in Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $200,000 bail on arson and related charges. On Thursday, Mr. Wolfgang sat quietly with his hands shackled in front of him and his feet in flimsy brown flip-flops while Schuylkill County Assistant District Attorney Charlie Bressi Jr. and public defender Lora McDonald met to discuss the case. Ms. McDonald pleaded "not guilty" on her client's behalf to two counts of felony arson and related offenses, causing or risking a catastrophe and third-degree misdemeanor criminal mischief. The attorneys agreed to hold the charges for trial in Schuylkill County without a formal hearing. A bail reduction hearing is scheduled for today in Schuylkill County Court. There was no mention of Mrs. Wolfgang during the proceeding. Mr. Wolfgang's parents sat behind their son at the hearing and left quickly. |

::::::::::::::::::::::::PENNSYLVANIA ALERT!!!!!!! :::::::::::::::::::::::Wolfgang fails to post bail By Marcia Moore The Daily Item February 03, 2007 POTTSVILLE — A Mount Carmel man who allegedly confessed to beating his wife to death last month will likely remain behind bars in Schuylkill County on arson charges this weekend after failing to pay bail Friday. Schuylkill County Judge Jacqueline Russell agreed Thursday to lower Steven D. Wolfgang's $200,000 cash bail on arson and related charges in connection with the intentional burning of a Chevrolet Blazer belonging to his wife, Sherry, who has been missing for nearly a month. Although Mr. Wolfgang's parents told the court last week that they could likely come up with $100,000 to release their son and the judge lowered the terms to 10 percent of $75,000, or $7,500 cash, no one posted his bail by late Friday afternoon. A county court clerk said while possible, it wasn't likely bail would be paid at a district judge's office on the weekend. Mr. Wolfgang, 46, of 207 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, has been in custody since Jan. 8 when he was arrested for burning his wife's vehicle at a parking area in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County. He's also facing two counts of child endangerment charges in Northumberland County due to his failure to provide care for his children, 6 and 9, when they arrived from school to an empty home that day. Bail on those charges has been set at $30,000. District Attorney Anthony Rosini said if Mr. Wolfgang is released from Schuylkill County Prison, he'll immediately be transferred to Northumberland County Prison and held until he posts bail there. Despite Mr. Wolfgang's alleged admissions to state police at Schuylkill Haven that he fatally beat his wife during an argument in their home Jan. 5 and threw her body stuffed inside a metal box into Mahanoy Creek, she remains missing and no homicide charges have been filed. http://www.dailyitem.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...3/NEWS/70203032 |

http://www.alliednews.com/statenews/cnhins..._160002427.html Published June 09, 2007 12:24 am - Searchers looking for a Mount Carmel woman missing since early January found a body in or near Mahanoy Creek early Friday morning. Did police find Sherry Wolfgang? Body found near Gowen City By Marcia Moore The Daily Item (Sunbury, Pa.) GOWEN CITY , Pa. — Searchers looking for a Mount Carmel woman missing since early January found a body in or near Mahanoy Creek early Friday morning. Several members of the state police at Stonington and Northumberland County sheriff deputies began searching the banks of the murky creek in three boats shortly after 8:15 a.m. and the unidentified body was found at 9:20 a.m. just off Route 2046 in Gowen City, trooper Matthew Burrows said. It could take days, maybe weeks, before the body is identified, he said. He declined to speculate whether the body is Sherry Wolfgang, the 42-year-old woman who has been missing for five months. It was the third or fourth time authorities have searched the creek looking for Mrs. Wolfgang and at least the second time they’ve combed the area where the body was found, trooper Burrows said. The search began in early January when Mrs. Wolfgang’s husband, Steven D. Wolfgang, admitted killing her and dumping her body in Mahanoy Creek, he said. Mr. Wolfgang, 47, made the confession to state police after he was found Jan. 8 near his wife’s burning Chevrolet Blazer off Route 4022 in Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, adjacent to Mahanoy Creek. At the time, Mr. Wolfgang told state police at Schuylkill Haven that he killed his wife during an argument at their Mount Carmel home on Jan. 5, stuffed her body into a metal box and threw it into the creek. Mr. Wolfgang later denied harming his wife and said he didn’t know where she was. Arrested at the time for arson and other charges related to the vehicle fire, he recently pleaded guilty and is in Schuylkill County Prison awaiting sentencing. Mr. Wolfgang is also scheduled to go on trial in Northumberland County for two counts of child endangerment for allowing his two children, ages 6 and 9, from a prior relationship to arrive home from school to an empty home on Jan. 8. Without a body or confirmation that Mrs. Wolfgang is dead, no charges have been filed in connection with her disappearance. Meanwhile, Northumberland County Coroner James F. Kelley has requested that all dentists and physicians who may have records pertaining to past treatment of Mrs. Wolfgang, previously known as Sherry Darlene Peters and Sherry Darlene Sheriff, are asked to call state police at Stonington at 286-5601. The body found Friday morning was located three to five miles downstream from where Mr. Wolfgang set his wife’s vehicle on fire. Trooper Burrows would not comment on whether the body was found in or near the creek or whether it was contained in a metal box. The body was secured at the scene for most of the day while state police, deputies, Northumberland County District Attorney Anthony Rosini and Mr. Kelley waited for a pathologist and forensic experts from southern Pennsylvania to arrive. At about 12:30 p.m., Mrs. Wolfgang’s grieving sisters, Debra Hardy and Barbara Weikel, both of Mount Carmel, and two friends showed up. They were not permitted near the creek or the body, but spoke for about 10 minutes with Mr. Rosini and state police. The women were told only that a body was found and it was too early to determine if it was their sister. “It’s going to be a long wait,” Mrs. Weikel said somberly as she left the area. Bail reduction petition withdrawn for Steven Wolfgang SUNBURY – The Mount Carmel man suspected of killing his missing wife has withdrawn his petition for a bail reduction. The Daily Item reports 46-year-old Steven Wolfgang was in Northumberland County Court yesterday because he was scheduled to ask President Judge Robert Sacavage to reduce his bail of $30,000 on two counts of child endangerment. However, Wolfgang’s attorney withdrew the petition for a bail reduction and did not elaborate on the reason. Wolfgang was charged in Northumberland County with child endangerment for leaving his two kids alone at their Mt. Carmel home, while he drove to Schuylkill County to set his wife Sherry’s SUV on fire. Wolfgang has admitted to police that he beat his wife to death in January and stuffed her body in a metal box and dropped in Mahanoy Creek. However, Sherry Wolfgang’s body has not been found, so no murder charges can be filed in the case. Wolfgang was charged in Schuylkill County with arson, for burning the SUV. He remains behind bars in Schuylkill County, even though his bail was reduced for the arson charge. Wolfgang can reapply for a bail reduction at a later time, according to his attorney, James Best. Steve Wolfgang, 46, is a father of two elementary school age children. Neighbors describe him as ”He was the type of guy who had a lot of friends, the type of guy you took a liking to. He was easygoing, just a laid-back person.” “I can’t see him hurting a fly.” Steve was a coal miner, but after hurting his back at work he was often in intense pain. But neighbors say that didn’t stop him from being a friend and helping out when he could. Four years ago he married Sherry, 42. The mother of two adult children, Sherry was working in a shirt factory, but she quit to stay home with Wolfgang’s two children. Neighbors describe her as “happy-go-lucky.” Neighbors say the couple appeared to get along well. They tended a vegtable garden together, camped, and visited with neighbors. Monday at 12:07 pm firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire. As they were extinguishing the blaze, Steve Wolfgang came out of the woods. He told firefighters it was his car and that he set it on fire. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries and was later arrested for arson. During that time it was determined that Sherry Wolfgang was missing. After his arraignment on the arson charges, Wolfgang spoke with reporters. He denied knowing the whereabouts of his wife. He allegedly stated “I think she left me,” “I couldn’t raise my children without her. I wanted to die.” He denied knowing what happened to his wife and said he thought she left him. According to one report Wolfgang told family members that he and Sherry had been drinking and had begun arguing. That Sherry said she was leaving and packed her bags and taken her wedding rings off. That he had passed out and when he woke he found Sherry gone and her packed bags still at the home. Sherry Wolfgang’s family did not buy the story. As Sherry’s sister pointed out, both Sherry’s vehicle and Wolfgang’s vehicle were accounted for as well as the fact that he had dropped her packed bags off with family members. Search’s were begun for Sherry Wolfgang in both the wooded area where the vehicle was located and a nearby creek. Searchers were contending with cold temperatures both with the air temperature and with the water temperature at about 40 degrees. The water is murky and rapid. There risk’s for the searcher’s of hypothermia, of falling into the water. Currently Wolfgang is being held on charges of 2 counts of arson, and one count each of risking catastrophe and criminal mischief. Despite the denials to reporters and family members, court documents show that Wolfgang may have been telling the police a different story. Allegedly at the hospital Wolfgang told state police that he and his wife had argued. Allegedly he had knocked her down, attempted to strangle her and shoved towels in her mouth. In the affidavit police stated “When that failed Steven then knelt on his wife’s chest and began to strike her chest with her knees” and that she died. He allegedly put her into a metal trunk, took it to the creek and threw it in. Allegedly he also left some clothing at the scene along the creek and that has been recovered. And allegedly before driving his wife’s body to the creek, Wolfgang left a note in the kitchen of the home admitting his guilt. Wolfgang has not been charged with the murder of Sherry Wolfgang. According to the district attorney he cannot place a charge of murder until the body is found. “Under Pennsylvania law, you cannot arrest someone on a confession alone.” Steve Wolfgang’s children are now with relatives. http://homesweethome.wordpress.com/2007/01...-hurting-a-fly/ |

Sherry Wolfgang, 42, of Mount Carmel had been missing since since Jan. 5 Her husband, Steven, 47, pleaded guilty May 22 to charges of arson and criminal mischief for burning his wife's sport utility vehicle on state game lands in rural Eldred Township on Jan. 8. He was sentenced July 19 to two years in Camp Hill State Prison. He has not been charged in his wife's death. Police said Steven Wolfgang initially told them he set fire to his wife's SUV while sitting in it because he ''couldn't live with'' the knowledge he had killed her, then put her body in a box and threw it in Mahanoy Creek, Northumberland County. But police say Wolfgang later said he believed his wife had left him and he had been injured trying to commit suicide when police found him near the burning SUV. Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini said Friday. |
