Public asked to help ID body found in lot at Hoboken/Weehawken border
Tuesday, March 13, 2007
Hudson County homicide detectives are seeking the public's help in identifying the frozen body of a man found Friday on the Hoboken/Weehawken border.

An autopsy performed on the badly decomposed body revealed no signs of trauma and did not determine the cause of death, but empty bags often used for drugs were found in the shelter where he was found covered with carpeting against the cold, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday.

Someone walking by the makeshift lean-to in a vacant lot on 17th Street between the Willow and Park avenue bridges saw a foot sticking from under the carpet the man had used as a blanket, reports said.

The man was 40 to 50 years old, weighed 160 pounds and was 5-foot-10, with a tattoo reading "Perdon Madre" on his left chest and another reading "Cat" on his right shoulder, reports said.

The man is thought to have been dead more than a week and may have died due to exposure during the recent cold snap, DeFazio said, or possibly due to natural causes or drug use, DeFazio said.

Toxicology tests will take about six weeks to complete, DeFazio said.

Anyone with information on the man is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office at (201) 915-1345.
