Digg it del.icio.us AIM Unknown tattooed man found dead by pool Police think fall injured brain By J.R. WELSH baybureau@aol.com BAY ST. LOUIS --Police are seeking the identity of a man who was found dead by a swimming pool after suffering head trauma in a suburban area of the city Monday night. The victim, believed to have been 45 to 56 years old, was spotted by a neighbor behind a home at 3 Woods Place. He had been bleeding and was slumped in an iron patio chair, Detective Sgt. Joe Kepfer said. Officer Joshua Speck responded to a call and found the man, who showed no signs of breathing. Speck notified American Medical Response. Kepfer said the victim "had been dead probably an hour before the time of police arriving." Forensic pathologist Dr. Paul McGarry and Hancock County Cororner Norma Stiglet also went to the scene. They concluded there was no sign of foul play, and the man died of accidental causes. Detective Lt. Don Watson said McGarry's preliminary investigation indicated the man apparently either stumbled into the patio chair or sat in it and tipped over, falling and suffering a blow to the head that caused bleeding in the brain. He is then thought to have placed the chair upright again and collapsed into it, where he lost consciousness and died. The victim had long black hair pulled back and bushy, dark eyebrows. He was dressed in a white T-shirt, bluejeans and white sneakers. Although he was carrying no identification, investigators said he had plenty of identifying marks. The man had a tattoo of an eagle on the right shoulder and extensive tattoos inside both arms. A tattoo inside the left arm was difficult to make out, but the inside of the right arm had a tattoo of a dragon inside a spider web. The back of his right hand also bore a single blue tattooed dot. "That is some kind of gang tattoo, but we're not yet sure what," Kepfer said. Kepfer took post-mortem fingerprints from the victim and faxed them to the FBI Special Processing Center in Maryland, for possible help in finding an identification. They came back without results. "He is not in the federal crime database," Kepfer said. Woods Place is a neighborhood of suburban homes off Esplanade Avenue near Bay High School. Some houses on the street are average in size and others are much larger and more expensive. Number 3, a white, two-story home with an expansive front lawn, is the next-to-last home on the left side of a cul-de-sac. The neighborhood seems an incongruous setting for the death of an anonymous, tattooed stranger, but nearby residents said neighbors had apparently never seen the man before. The owner of the home reportedly works in Africa, according to two men who were present on the front porch Tuesday afternoon. Both asked not to be identified. One of them, who said he rented the house, said he had not actually seen the victim himself. Kepfer and Watson are heading the investigation and several other members of the Police Department are assisting. Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Glen Grice is also participating. Investigators are asking that anyone with information about the victim notify the Bay St. Louis Police Department at 467-9222. http://www.sunherald.com/201/story/105584.html |
