Body Part Discovered in West Charlotte; Police Looking for Clues Police combed a wooded area in West Charlotte on Monday trying to learn more about some human remains that were discovered there on Saturday. Bryan Short was walking his dog when he discovered a human foot behind the Studio Six Hotel on Queen City Drive. "I basically grabbed my dog and took off and told my mom to call the cops," Short said. Police have an idea who the victim is but they haven't officially commented on the woman's identity. On Monday, more than two dozen officers searched the woods looking for any evidence that might explain how the victim ended up there. Family members of 23-year-old Atoi Watson told us they think the body could be her. Watson vanished in September after getting into a fight with her boyfriend and he lives real close to the hotel. Police towed his white truck but haven't said what they were looking for. WBTV's Sarah Batista has more details about the investigation. CMPD Unraveling Murder Mystery Tonight, we know how investigators initially identified the body of Atoi Watson, found in the woods Saturday. A distinguishing tattoo helped point them in the right direction and they didn't have to look far. The body was found in her boyfriend's backyard. He is now charged with murder. WBTV's Sarah Batista first broke this story and has more on what family members are saying now that she's been officially identified. -------- The only family she has here are a few cousins who say after she went missing, they suspected Eric Morales all along. Her parents are both deceased and her brother went to jail shortly after she disappeared in September. And it seemed everybody had just about forgotten about Atoi Watkins, until Saturday. When Atoi Watson never made it to work on September 14, 2007 her boss knew something was wrong. Watson worked here at a bakery. They said she was a reliable employee, trying to turn her life around after a rough upbringing. Christopher Davis, who lived across the street described her,"Nice girl, never caused any problems or anything." Davis says he remembers seeing the missing persons flyers after she disappeared, but figured she'd show up one day. She never did. One neighbor remembered Watson and her boyfriend, fighting outside of her apartment around the time she went missing. He says the boyfriend had a knife and dragged her back inside. That was the last time anyone saw her. Five months went by before a man walking his dog stumbled upon human remains in woods near a hotel. Those woods also stretch behind the house where Watson's boyfriend, Eric Morales, had been living. Chris Jones lived with him and said he couldn't believe Morales was charged in her murder, "right now it's uncomfortable for us being here as well," he said. Investigators searched the woods for days after she was found. They have yet to say how Watson was killed or where, but knowing what happened doesn't bring much closure to those who knew her. Morales is being held without bond tonight. http://www.wbtv.com/news/topstories/15602897.html |
